Unfortunately I couldn't get your going, Orlando - even though the pump filled with water well enough, the issue seems to be the volume of air locked in the herms coil - there just isn't enough of a head of water past the pump to shift it.
Happily though I did find a configuration that worked for me and, even better, with very little/no liquid leakage. I moved the bleed valve to the entrance of the herms coil, about a foot above the exit of the pump. Opening the valve immediately let water flush through the pump and fill the tube up until the top of the herms and this provided enough water past the pump to push the remaining air out. Tried it quite a few times from empty and started every time at full bore, so I'm happy.
Thanks for all your suggestions - now I'm testing out some whirlpooling configurations..
=D> I use a RIMS set up so didn't realise that the HERMS set up might prevent the solution. Anyway, you have cracked it so well done.
