Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
Brewed this yesterday. Looking for a nice zingy NZ session ale.
Also, to keep Seymour happy, I split it into 2 FVs to ferment half with Wyeast 1469 Yorkshire ale and half with WLP006 Bedford ale. 7 litres of each. I also have a Wyeast 1728 waiting to be used soon. Doing some yeast experimenting, I've used 002 a few times and want to see what else is out there that might make me happy.

Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
Love the name, and two great hops that really go together.
I recently made NZ ale with these two plus Green Bullit, cascade and Dr Rudi, lovely hop flavour with a simple pale malt backbone.
How many times a week are you brewing, it seems like twice a day from your posts?

Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
I'm brewing a lot atm, had a long barren spell, but left my job a couple of weeks ago so I'm having fun and building stocks and trying new yeasts. I make small batches, and the double brew day was with a mate to make beer for him.
Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
I was made redundant from a big Pharma company in June after 3 years notice and now haveloads of time to brew.
I did the 9 week Brewlab course finished in September and still have about 5 types of beer made whilst there so both of my brew fridges are full.
Following your spate of brewing I am planning the following before Christmas:
Plum porter
APA based, nice and chewy and lots of hops
Another 4- 5 hop NZ ale
Will post details once I clear my fridges later this week.

Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
In similar boats then, those ideas sound good. In two weeks I have brewed and bottled 7.5 litres of Chinook pale and 7.5 litres Redundancy stout, brewed the 4 hop APA and the stout with my mate, for him, and have 14 litres of Nelson Motueka in two FVs that I brewed on Saturday. So that's only actually about 28 litres total, when bottled, for me so far. I'm planning a few small batches:
1. A red/amber ale with two or three hops from Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo. Probably one of the first three plus Amarillo.
2. A porter - similar to my last one which was fantastic.
3. Possibly a mild, Bram X likely to feature.
4. Two English pale ales, one with Brewer's Gold and Bobek probably, the other to be decided, maybe Admiral/First Gold.
5. An American pale ale involving Mosaic.
6. A very special NZ pale ale. I'm all excited cos a pack of Riwaka hops is about to circumnavigate the Earth and land on my doormat.
So about one a week before xmas! I do a small batch in 3 hours tops. My main thrust is testing out some yeasts, Wy1469, Wy1728 and WLP006 mainly, but will be trying to culture some from bottles like Young's and Marble breweries.

These are both down to 1012 after 10 days, and they taste remarkably different. 1469 is smooth and creamy and masking the hops a bit, 006 is a bit spicy, more hop flavour. Two very different beers. Fermented side by side, only the yeast strain is different.
Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
Update! This Nelson Motueka is conditioning itself into a really nice beer, after three weeks in the bottle. Both these yeasts are great. The 1469 Yorkshire is softer, mutes the hops more, and provides nice soft fruitiness. The 006 Bedford gives a sharper beer, accentuates spiciness and hops more, is really clean and I really like it. Good mouth feel, very clear and good foam. Two yeasts to use more, for sure. You don't see people using the Bedford much, which is odd, cos it's great. A top quality yeast going off this brew.

Interesting brews there and I am particularly interested in your use of the 1469 in this one as this is one of my go to yeasts for a lot of my english ales. Although I have just bought a vial of White Labs Edinburgh Ale which hopefully will give a 50/50 malt/hops balance. Have you used that one too?

I haven't, no. I bottled an American Amber Ale today with Wyeast 1728, Scottish ale yeast, same or similar strain. First time I've used it.laithclark wrote: Interesting brews there and I am particularly interested in your use of the 1469 in this one as this is one of my go to yeasts for a lot of my english ales. I've sampled another of the Nelson Motueka beers with 1469, it's changing and the hops have come back. Getting more hoppy and a bit cleaner, I felt. The comments above were on a very early bottle taster.
Re: Free Nelson Motueka (Session pale ale)
Only one bottle of this left, an extremely enjoyable and drinkable ale which hits the zingy, light, quaffable spot right in the middle. I think the WLP006 edged it. I think this is a great yeast, the beer is juicy, malty hoppy and has great mouthfeel, head and is crystal clear. The 1469 is not far behind, also done a great job.
