So 10 or so days ago I did the below brew.
I intended it on being a really hoppy IPA, and using an online calculator, some recipes I found (and trying to use up some odds and sods), I came up with this.
4.5l Brew
Grain Bill:
900g Maris Otter
100g Wheat Malt
100g Crystal Malt
100g Flaked Oats
Hops:
10g Summit @ 60 mins
5g Mosaic @ 15 mins
5g Citra @ 15 mins
5g Mosaic @ 0 mins
5g Citra @ 0 mins
Dry hopped with 5g of Mosaic.
1/4 tsp Irish Moss @ 15 mins
Pitched with safale t58 yeast.
OG: 1.060
FG: 1.012 (predicted)
According to the calculators I used, that would give me a pale red coloured beer. But it's come out black, guess my Crystal Malt is much darker than i ordered!
Put the dry hops in today, should bottle it Sunday or Monday. Smells good, looking forward to trying it.
AG Brew #4 - A Darker IPA than intended....
Re: AG Brew #4 - A Darker IPA than intended....
I'm far from an expert, but I'm surprised its black with that grain bill, Is it just looking in your FV? have you held a sample up to the light? what was the crystal?

Not held a sample up to the light yet, but brewing in a demijohn means I can see it pretty well. It's very dark.
The crystal malt was meant to be 120EBC. I'm wondering if it was incorrectly labelled by the LHBS or supplier.
I'm tempted to brew this beer again either with no crystal, or with a different bag of crystal.
