Grainfather brew #2 Standard Bitter

Post by bryanferry » Fri Apr 01, 2016 6:29 pm

Thanks to an impromptu afternoon off work cracked onto making a standard bitter on my Grainfather. Thought I would post the session as its been about 3 years since I posted a brewday.

During the week I had popped into my local homebrew shop (Brewers Barn in Ipswich) on my lunchbreak for a nose about. Ended up walking out with a bag full of grain and very kindly a free packet of slightly outdated Boadicea hops.

On the fly came up with a receipe of:
3kg Pale malt
500g Caramalt
250g torrified wheat

35g Boadicea (pellets) at 60min boil
15g goldings (pellets) at 15min
10g Boadicea (pellets) at 15min

set up with my old e-keggle (which i was going to get rid of, warming up the sparge water)

forgot to do the grain shot so heres a hop shot

post mash warming up to boil

just hit boil and first hops in, slight foam up but mash paddle knocked it down.

Chiller set up. I really love this coil. straight out at 19c after some tap adjustments.

Image
had predicted 1.038 but the grainfather seems more efficient than the app gives credit

Image
bit of the run off to get the yeast started; some S-04

Its still going so have the clean up to go before some food and obligatory ale.

first time of using pellet hops and was curious if they would work with the GF. Very happy with the outcome as no blockages and much easier to clean up afterwards than the leaf debris i normally get. Filter held up well with the 60g if hops. Will have to see if it can cope with my usual over 200g IPA's.

Overall a nice smooth session (which is what I hoped with the GF) the app to go with the kit works very well and keeps you on track when you get distracted by life. Not as dark a bitter as I expected when checking over the recipe. If it turns out nice might add some brewers caramel next time to send it in the direction of Adnams bitter.
