AG#55 Trident Pale Ale

Post by charliemartin » Thu Sep 29, 2016 8:43 pm

Hi,
Not posted a brewday for a while. Hadn't really planned to post this one either so didn't take any pictures, but there are plenty of previous brewdays of mine with pics available.
This was a bit of a user up sort of brew with regard to hops anyway. The Target hops are getting a bit old as I tend to use them for bittering only so it takes a while to get through them.
The brewday went quite well. Did a 45 minute mash for the first time. Normally do at least 60 and usually 90 minutes or more so it will be interesting to see if it has any effect. Certainly did not notice any reduction in efficiency. Hit 78% brewhouse efficiency which is par for the course with my system and two batch sparge routine.
The hops caused a bit of a blockage when running off the wort into the FV. Probably due to all the dust in the Columbus hops. Must have been a some floor sweepings in there!
Hit my numbers on the dot today, which is always nice.
I have been having a few problems with infected beers lately so went back to dry yeast as I suspect my liquid yeast handling may not be up to scratch on the sanitary side. I have bleached all my FVs as well so hopefully it will not be a problem in the future. May be time to replace them though as they are getting a bit old.
Having said all that, I decided to be ultra cautious and just sprinkle the yeast onto the wort (US05) as directed on the packet. I would normally reyhdrate it, but figured that was a small risk of introducing infection too, so just chucked it in. Unfortunately I also managed to chuck the yeast packet in as well! #-o
Hopefully this won't cause another infection. All tucked up in the fermentation fridge @ 18C.

Cheers Hanglow,
Hoping for a nice easy drinking pale ale. Just hope I haven't overdone the Target bittering addition.
