following DaaB's suggestion from yesterday, i tried a full batch sparge which was much quicker and easier - i got about 6.5L into the boil but still ended up a touch short with 4.5L in the fermenter - i hadn't allowed for the losses when racking from one demijohn to another to leave the break material behind. i reckon a touch more grain and another 1L in the sparge next time and i should be at 5L.
again, it tasted good before pitching. it's just beginning to bubble. the bitter i made yesterday has been trying to escape from the demijohn for most of today.
this is a great method if you're in a flat and a bit short on space.
