dartgod - many thanks, both posts helped. I did just pour in the topping-up water then took an immediate reading (without stirring). I reckon I added about 4 litres of top-up but the 19 litres of wort, before top up, was just about 'bob-on' at 1040 so there's no doubt it is weaker than it should be. But perhaps not as bad as I first thought.

I like the idea of checking pre-boil OG - you use beersmith but is there a simple way of calculating this, do you know?

In the end, though, I just don't think I built into my calculations enough allowance for losses in the process - this was the first time I hadn't meticulously followed a recipe :(

Here is a free spreadsheet software.......your pre-boil SG will be at the bottom of the mash section..........it's not as good as BeerSmith but works in a pinch.....you can also change all the parameters and names of ingredients but you have to do it manually for each ingredient and each time you do a new recipe..... http://hbd.org/recipator/

dartgod, some excellent info there - I want to get brewing again: straightaway.

But, it's going to have to wait 'til I come back from holiday.

Here is another link on pre-boil SG gravity....I haven't ever used this one, but run across it and thought it might help.....

Just as an update - I transferred this all-Challenger brew to KK last night. It had dropped out to 1.006, I primed it with 70gms of brown sugar as a solution and it will now be left for 3/4 weeks.

Have to say, despite my disappointment with the process on this one, that it looks like it could taste superb. The US-05 really does seem to have a clean taste which lets the hops come through. It reminded me, in no small way, of the beer on which I was weaned - Hartley's Ordinary Bitter (R.I.P.). If it matures like that it'll be gone in days.

To me, that is the most important part of any brew, how do you like the taste of it!

We all have a glitch of some sort in our brewing career, it is important not to get too downhearted about it until you have tasted the finished brew, it rarely screws up altogether.
