Yeast : Nottingham

Original recipe also had 1kg of crystal but I forgot it on my grain order
Hope it will still be OK , just a bit different to Frothys batch.

Also had problems again getting the mash upto temp.
Liquor was @ 83 but after doughin temp in mash tun was only at 58 :?
It must have been the low temp of the large grain bill that caused the drop.
Added another 5 lt of liquor at 85 but that only got the mash to 62.
In the end I drew off 20lt from the mash tun and brought upto 80+ in the old Electrim bin, added back the mash tun and we hit 66 - hurrah! :D

Still got 30 mins left on the mash clock, so it could be a late one!

Nice

With that mash temp you may not need or notice the loss of the crystal malt

I've had that one happen to me, it finally dawned on me that it must be the temp of th egrain causing the problem, So I started measuring the grain temp and using the strike heat calculator in Promash, and I tend to hit it dead on . . . . . Unless I do something dumb and pitch before the mash tun has cooled to the strike temperature.

Another thing I found really useful is storing my grain the cupboard with the CH boiler, That way I don't need such a high strike heat.

Looks tasty MB. I've got POP's stout going in the boiler as we speak. Hope it goes well for you. :D

Just finished clean up this morning, 10:30 last night was late enough.
In the morning I had driven from Hemel to Leicester to get my new catering sink for the brewery, thats why I had late start.

Anyway, 50lt @1.054 in the end. A bit low on gravity but i couldn't get the last 5lt to siphon out of the mash tun.
So it needed a bit more sparge liquor to get the required volume and late diluted the wort more than anticipated.

Plenty of activity from the Nottingham yeast this morning sitting snuggly in a camping mat @ 20c.
Must build that fermentation chamber next. 8)

Definately one of those brews, as POP says, never gets done the same way twice. I hope the crystal balances the bitterness of the malts for you it'll certainly give you the body. How big is your boiler for 50L?

cheers

Frothy - 100lt boiler with a big mutha heater element 3 x 3kw!
I only use 2 elements as i only have 6mm cable running to the garage/brewery and it wouldn't handle 9kw.
