Brewday 6-10

Post by prolix » Sat Oct 06, 2007 10:06 am

Hope to make it a double brewday as I lost a brew last month to fruit fly and need to get stocks up.

Starting with an Theakstons OP clone like Spearmints except had to adjust ingredients as I ran out of crystal

Theakston op 20l

4.2 kg maris
0.5 kg crystal
0.1 kg black
0.3 kg wheat
0.5 kg sugar

mash @ 68 for 90mins

I'll try batch sparging again as it's quicker

Hops
25g fuggles @4.5% 90mins
20g challenger @6.2% 90 mins
10g goldings @4.0% 15 mins

should give 63 og @ 75% efficency

no moss or whirliflock left so oh hum this one shouldn't need to worry about brightness

There are even some photos :pink:

effiecency well down think I muffed the sparge oh hum looking at about 66% so will have to reduce brew length a litre or two to get the og.

Original OP is only about 5.6% isn't.
I wouldn't worry about your lower effiecency, just go for taste and colour 8)
Hope is goes smooth from here.
Check out the beers we have for sale @ Mix Brewery

hmm... now just confused decided to put the last vestifges of the mash tun in the boil to save some eff and retook the FG it was up to 56 from 48 with 2 litres extra wort that makes it nearly 90% eff now.

I used my refractometer for the readings but the second was after the hot break and hop addition.

I am gonna have to ignore all this science and go back to good old tatse testing a lot less stressfull

Second brew was going to be london pride but ran out of crysatl so thought I'd go mad and use chocolate instead hence the name

Choccolocco

3.8 maris
0.2 choc
40g fuggles 90
20g styrian 15
whiriflock 15

EBU 28

Yes Patsy we love you I forgot about the free sample you gave me last time and there it was in me box you beauty

Daab must have still had some water on the refractometer when I took the first reading only way to explain the gain.

DaaB wrote:are you saying that by adding 2L of the final runnings your gravity has gone up from 40 to 56, that doesn't sound right.
Sometimes i am so thick! the 500g of sugar I added might have been the reason for the increase in SG it was 48 to 56 ](*,)

Great pics P 8)

I did M Ollossons Flowers Original Bitter and thought I'd screwed it up when the boil gravity was far too low mid boil....I had forgotten that I was about to add a whole lot of golden syrup to the boil

So your not the only one

Both beers safely asleep the yeast starters were like a rocket. That was a tiring day, think I'll stick to single brewdays from now on, just needed to stock up and get the OP on for Christmas.
