Go ahead - it's the lid of a 5L fermenting bucket I used when mini mashing. Drill a few dozen holes and float it on the top - works a treat for recirculating first runnings (I batch sparge). Also the lip around the edge helps to hold the liquid while it runs through the lid :)

Tin foil does have it's uses :)

1014 already in 48 hours - just had a taste - looks like it should turn out quite nice, lovely golden colour to it - lots of diacetyl in there and quite bitter but that's no surprise as it's only been in the FV 2 days :D

Must remember to leave this one in the FV for ten days to give the yeast a chance to clear up after itself - patience really is a virtue which I'm slowly learning!

Looks like it's finished on 1.008 which seems a bit low for SO4 but I'm happy with that - winded up slightly stronger than I anticipated but I'm not knocking ~4.8%.

Had a sip from the hydro sample, it's a lovely golden straw colour, just what I was hoping for. I'm loving the Challenger hops!

Going to leave this until Wednesday before kegging in to a cornie & maturing for 4-5 weeks in time for (hopefully) some summer sun.

FG is definitely 1.008 so will be kegging this tomorrow or Wednesday. I've decided to call it Summerbreeze :)

I kegged this today. The half pint taster was nice - still getting a bit of diacetyl in there, even after 9 days in FV... Can I blame the S04 yeast, or should I really be leaving it longer in the FV?

I think I'm under hopping too - it didn't taste very bitter, which I would have expected straight out the FV. I keep my hops in the freezer, but they aren't vacuum packed, just folded over in the packet and stuck with freezer tape - could this be the problem?

Hopefully it'll be a nice easy summer ale in a month or so :?
