I had the same problem a short while ago and decided to investigate, The guage is now working as it should after I did the above. Also used it this weekend for a brew I did.
Ive just took it apart and was indeed very wet inside, its now sitting in the airing cupboard to dry. I did end up buying a spirit thermomiter to replace it whicj worked ok but did get lost in the mash a couple of times.

Yep I have a spirit one as well and to stop loosing it I have tied some string to the loop at the top mwhich means i can leave it in the boil dangeling and keep an eye on the boil temp.
