my runnings are never as clear as that - I pour back first few litres into mash tun (similar mashtun to the pics here). Have I made the slits to large perhaps? I always get quite gritty runnings, and end up with lots of cold break later on. Any advice guys???

It was pretty clear which surprised me given the 50% wheat content.

CF, I would just return the first runnings to the mash tun until it runs clear.

I've never had much success with the runnings going clear. Can't be bothered to worry about it now...

I always use MO as my base malt so maybe that's why I've never had a problem with eventually getting clear runnings. That said, before I recirculated, I never worried about whether the runnings were clear or not. I always had a couple of pints that didn't run clear then it ran as clear as crystal.

"Turbid worts, particularly those
containing hot trub, showed increased fermentation performance"

Well I'm certainly getting that this morning!!! its gone mad, bubbling up through the bubbler and onto the fermenter lid.... maybe I should leave it open for 24hrs....

Here is my manifold Andy - homemade..... its not currently fixed to the outlet, I wonder if the grain is working its way round the exit?? very likely I guesss. I'f assumed the grain would keep the manifold in place - what do others do? any advice on modifications?????

Do you use it with the slots upwards ?

It's recommended to use slots downwards to reduce deadspace and also assist in filtering...

It's also very likely that grain is coming through the outlet if you don't have a snug fitting. Some use braided hose to connect the tap to the copper, I use a hozelok connector and some PVC tubing.

Yeah, definitely slots down on my system. No sure of the benefit but it certainly seems to be the convention. :)

Thanks Guys, I do usually use it slots down, I think its likely the gap around the exit. I'll try connecting with hosing and see how that works out next time....

if you could shorten the width you may see an improvement. You want the manifold to collect the wort from beneath the grain rather than it taking the water that slips around the edge.
