I am about to pitch my yeast in about an hours time. A starter has been made from the White Labs WLP004. As of yet there is no action. If i still get no action later this evening would a tight or loose fitting lid be preferable for the fermenting vessel?
So far I have managed to get about 27 litres of wort into the boiler. The last runnings were around the 1012 mark. I found that fly sparging has to be done very slowly otherwise the runnings drop off too quick. I decided to run some off. Part refill. Rest. Run some more off. Part refill. Rest etc etc. I seemed to get a more consistant run off that way.
Time to turn the boiler off and let it cool now before the CFC goes into action. Just enough time for me to pick my daughter up from school
3rd AG Brew Stout starts 16th Nov
My main PC has died with some sort of serious malfunction so I am working on my laptop now. I cant download the pictures until the brother in law has weaved his electronic magic on the PC. I will post the pictures and the results midweek. The stout is now 1.048 @ 25 litres. This time off will give me time to read more threads and start working out some efficiencies
I have just syphoned this into the secondary. It is now at 1011. You can really taste the chocolate and its not too bitter. I am going to add the auxillary finings and leave it in the garage for a week before it goes into the Keg. I want to save the yeast as it was the whitelabs irish ale yeast. I am going to tip the yeast into a demijohn and add a bit of sterile water, leave for a few days and then split into 3 or 4 small PET bottles
