first AG brewday for midweek
Cheers DaaB.DaaB wrote:3.2kg of pilsner malt in 16L should give you 1059.2 in the lab so you've got 81% efficiency. Excellent.
I did all of it via the info I have gleened from this forum

Now its time to buy a Wheeler book I think. It goes to show what a great resource JHBK really is

And to all the people sitting on the fence thinking about going AG, just do it

And if you are feeling intimadated by it all just read Jims brewing techniques, as it cuts to the chase of making beer simply. I must admit at times reading about HERMS and RIMS systems can make brewing seem more complicated than it needs to be to get started.
Pardon my ignorence DaaB but, how do you gain those figures?DaaB wrote:3.2kg of pilsner malt in 16L should give you 1059.2 in the lab so you've got 81% efficiency. Excellent.
I always like to know the math before looking at software. My favorite PDA is a pencil and paper(still havent crashed one yet in my *cough* years)

HERMS and RIMS are not for new brewers, they're more likely to put you off brewing forever, unless your a persistant bugger like myselfI must admit at times reading about HERMS and RIMS systems can make brewing seem more complicated than it needs to be to get started.

Its on my shopping list, I just need someone in a accounts dept to press send. I have been playing with the demo and it is VVVVV goodDaaB wrote:
Appart from maybe refractometer calculations there's nothing you can't do with pencil and paper or rules of thumb in a couple of minutes. Unless of course you are thinking of buying Beer Alchemy for the Macin which case just buy the software

I wish that I could live without a mobile, but 12 years of the damn things I have seen them go from a functioning tool, to a piece of rubbish that spend most of the time crashing or breaking.DaaB wrote: Sometimes I wonder how we ever managed without PDAs or mobile phones...oh wait, I do![]()
Thanks as ever DaaB I now understand the gravity points thing quoted around.DaaB wrote: Keep this to yourself....I was saving that one for a news letter.![]()
The potential extract of lager malt is 296 gravity points for 1 kg of malt in 1 L of beer so 3.2kg in 16L (in the lab) will give you (3.2x296)/16=59.2 so you are raising water, sg 1.000 by 59.2 pts ie 1059.2
You got 1048 or 48 in 16L so your efficiency is (48/59.2)x100=81%
Jim also explains it here http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/recipe_formulation.htm

Sadly not a option, as I need to be contactable by people who want to give me workDaaB wrote:Just stop answering them, I did, to my amazement life still goes onI wish that I could live without a mobile, but 12 years of the damn things I have seen them go from a functioning tool, to a piece of rubbish that spend most of the time crashing or breaking.(btw I switched off my answer-phone too. I found people actually start coming round your house more
or is that something to do with always have homebrew around

Oh and we have no shortage of people poping over both locals and Brits, and now the locals have tasted the homebrew Ican't get shot of them at times

Update:
Dropped down to 1,008(chuffed with that). It looks like beer smells like beer and tastes hoppy light malty and green.
The Goldings taste great, though I think I may have slightly over cooked them(well my scales did go nipples north), I think in about a month or a half this should be a fine brew.
And the name is 100% Spanishfaction
Must go now the Imodium has run out.

Cheers for that TS. For all the woes it was painless, durring the mashing I cooked a piri-piri chicken with all the trimmings and the washing up, racked my Linthwaite light into secondry and fitted a tap to a fermenter bucket.tubby_shaw wrote:Congratulations P2![]()
It really is easy isn't it![]()
Keep up the good work
I will hopefully be getting out of my low tech situation soon...........BUT it can be done really with sod all.
I was hoping to do brew 2 today or the next couple of days before I fly out on my next job, but Marrakesh is leaving serious exit wounds.
Brew 2 was(or is that will be) going to be a revision of 100% Spanishfaction with the addition of fresh elderflowers at flameout, using about 8grms, seeing as the IC is still a no show, steeping the elderflowers overnight should do the trick just like in cordial making.
I bottled just yesterday after 2-3 weeks in the secondry.
Quite hopy in a good way, and none of the sweet nose that you get off kits, SWMBO thought it had a great taste, she is hassling me to make my elderflower ale and a cherry beer, both of which will be modifications of 100% Spanishfaction.
Cheers all for the help and I will report back when I have cracked a bottle open

I thought that piece of info would be good news to you JPJ_P wrote:That's brilliant - I was hoping that going AG would get rid of that plastic sweet twang you get from kits. Glad to hear it went well in primary. I'll look forward to reading the reviews
