AG#65 Achilles IPA (+ lots of pics)
Re: AG#65 Achilles IPA (+ lots of pics)
Lol! I'm still working on it! Tryin to make it cool without looking like a douchey pic of brad pit! Lol
Re: AG#65 Achilles IPA (+ lots of pics)
just taken a sample of this. Down to 1.021 so 65.5% attenuation in 4.5 days. BeerAlchemy predicted 76% and I have consistently got 75-76% from the previous generations of this yeast. Given it a gentle rouse and temp check, sat at 18.1oC.
Taste and aroma wise..........GREAT! all tangerines, mango, grapefruit and other tropical fruits. Bitter but I think the sweetness that is still left in the beer is masking some of the bitterness still. I'll have a better idea once it has finished fermenting and the yeast has dropped out, although the impression at the moment is a nice firm, but smooth bitterness. The colour is fantastic, exactly what I was hoping for. Again I don't think I can get a clear handle on wether the malt will come through at all until it has finished and the yeast drops but I'm hoping for a slight malt presence backed up with a bit of 'interest' from the amber and crystal additions.
Can not wait to have this through a hand pump!

Tangerines..... I have a thing at the moment for beers (IPA's especially) that have a certain 'marmalade' character...

I for one can't wait to try this....
What hop (if any) do you think lends the tangerine flavour/aroma?
Cheers!

Re: AG#65 Achilles IPA (+ lots of pics)
me to guy! I love that grapefruit pith, orange skin tart citrus taste you get from these big ass US hops and big west coast IPA's. I think the tangerine is coming from the summit.
Re: AG#65 Achilles IPA (+ lots of pics)
Aye!
You can get a certain marmalade character using English hops - First Gold and Challenger can yield a similar - if not as intense marmalade character (compared to US hops!)
If you like maramalade then you'll like my IPA entry!
Remains to be seen what the judges will make of it...
Do you have any summit left that you'd care to swop? I only ask as I promised SWMBO no more brew ingredients purchases until I move all my gear out of the house...
I might like to try it in one of the single hop brew I'm planning in the run up to summer...

Ey up guy, sorry mate I'm all out of summit for now but will be getting some more in ASAP so would be up for a swap!
I racked this to secondary yesterday and dry hopped with 20g each of summit, Apollo, chinook, Columbus and simcoe! Going to dry hop for 1 week then straight into cask, with more hops!

Ey up LB!
I managed to score some summit from a certain PDTNC... He was flogging them off on the forum somewhere...
Sounds great, I think I have finally got my beers right on the aroma hopping - the last two have been spot on but I think it is the area my IPA entry is lacking - plenty of flavour but could use more aroma...
I tried my hop rocket (pressie from SWMBO) on my recent Kolcsh disaster and it has transformed it! I plan to post about it when I get the chance...
But the upshot was I had a brew day disaster on my last Kolsch attempt (not 13 oddly but 14!) so now its a dry hopped Blonde!
It will need drinking quickly , but will preserve my other beer stocks for the time being.
I will do a summer beer using the Summit when I get back after the NCB meet !
Looking forward to trying Achilles IPA and 'is it 'cos I is Black?' at the meet !
Cheers!

Looks good!
I arrived in Shipley an hour ago...
Found the brewery and will hunt out some eats soon...
Hope my beers survived their journey by land sea and air...
