Pie's First AG Brew 20 Aug 2006
QUOTE (andy @ Aug 20 2006, 08:30 AM)If you assume that 1kg of grain absorbs 1lt of liquor then:-
with 6.65kg of grain
at a liquor/grist ratio of 2.5L/kg then you use 16.5L in the mash
mash will absorb say 6.5L of this so runoff would yield 10L
Target is 6 gallons = 27.3L so in two equal batches = 2 x 13.65L
So top up mash with 13.65 - 10 = 3.65L before first runoff
Second infusion = 13.65L
I'm not a batch sparger so the above is theory only!ÂÂ
This is spot on for batch sparging IMO. Almost exactly as I do it. In fact those volumes are nearly identical to what i used in my latest batch.
PoP what problems did you have with the taps? I use the same ones. FYI - I do not screw mine overly tight and I leave them at an angle so they don't protrude below the bottom of the bucket/tun. I use them on my fermenter, mash tun and bottling bucket

I think that when I cut the hole on the fermenter it wasn't quite big enough. As a result when tightening the tap it put pressure on the wrong places of the washer. This caused the washer to 'jump' over the lip. Once this happened there was no longer a seal
I have since fixed the problem by sanding down the hole giving me more room to play. Also by not tightening the tap into the hole and using the washer to tighten this has meant that the setup is close on to perfect (the fermenter hasn't leaked so far)

I have now tried my stout (several times) and must say that despite initial dissapointment, I am actually quite impressed with this brew.

Either the bitterness is reducing, it is getting lost in the head or I am getting used to it. Either way, I think I would make this again
btw, the glass is so small as it was a sneaky sample. Still really needs to mature....
