Wicked set-up Andy. Great pic's too.
Really interesting thread to me as a noobie. It's good to see a RIMS set up like yours. It looks like a lot simpler than some of the ones i've seen on forums.

I'm going to nick your wrapped up in a camping mat idea for my boiler-great idea and i think it will solve my mega boil/slow simmer issue.

Andy, Am I right in thinking that you got this from BnQ? I never could get my heater to work above 60C -ish effectively. I do wonder if that was a problem with the heater or the circuit. Unfortunately when I tried to dissassemble the element I discovered that its not an easy job and broke it :( still if yours is a BnQ element I'll go back and get another, and try again.

Cheers

Hi Aleman, I got the towel element from ebay but it is B&Q branded.

I was worried after reading about your experiences with the trip-out but mine is fine and doesn't seem to have a cutout in it. As I mentioned I could raise the mash to 72 degC at mashout however it was struggling to raise the last 1 degree but I think this is down to heat losses in the process pushing the 800W available heat.

Edit: when I was testing with just water the system could only get to 70 degC, since then I insulated the 22mm copper pipe with foam pipe insulation.

I forgot to turn the element off when I turned the pump off during the last brew. It doesn't have a cut-out...

 I am actually thinking of bringing the bruheat boiler down from the loft to do this beer kit, but I would have to make a single coil IC, as I only have a double, and then there is a cooling probe (ala Rob Maxwell/Daab) to chill the small FV.

I already have the RIMS Chamber but my heater wasn't performing, so I am only replacing some kit not getting new. . . . Although the underback now has a 2.2KW kettle element in it, in case this heater is as crap as the first  I just don't think the 10A SSR I have in the controller can cope (its borderline), so I will need a 25A one soon

Ive been talking to Vossy and guys in china about SSR's and it seems we should have at least a 40A rated unit to run continuous 3KW heaters and then a heatsink strapped to it aswell. I have just bought this one off eBay

SSR and Extras's

And I managed to get a refund as I didnt want the bar bit at the back.

PS Wheres the link for me to learn how to reduce urls to clickys. Ive got a spare 10 minutes to learn this neat trick
