Well I'm a bit confused,
whoever it was came up with this, may thanks, it's a cracker and a winner in our house,
if the wife says she likes it, it's a good brew
btw, I have some Green Bullet marauding in the freezer so they may be used on another one of these.....

Craphaus - aka warrenlw63 on aussiehomebrewer.com is the bloke who created this recipe.
And yes Rook, the 3 shades will be the next stout i brew, sometime in autumn next year. A tad too warm for stouts IMO.

Re: 18/09/08 - Four Shades of Stout
Hi Guys,
I'm wanting to give this a go next week, but only want to do 23L not 55. Am I right in thinking dividing each measurement by 2.4 should be ok. So this would be the recipe
Maris Otter 3230gms
Flaked Barley 500 gms
Amber Malt 250 gms
Chocolate Malt 250 gms
Roasted Barley 200 gms
Carafa Special 200 gms
Cascade 40 gms
I've rounded up and down a couple of times to make it easier.
Cheers,
Paul

Yep, thats correct.
You have to make sure that your hops are the same A.A. as the original recipe though, if they're not you can work them out using Daab's hop calculator

Have a good one Paul, it's a belter brew, not many bottles left now....in fact I've just been to H&G today to fill the grain cupboard back up to do this again on Sat/Sun.
as RTD has said, all your measurements are spot on, I've just scaled it down in Promash and checked.

Re: 18/09/08 - Four Shades of Stout
Well, I've still got a bottle of it left!
I had one of these last night (thanks Garth
) and it was beautiful. Lovely aroma of dark malts and hops and a nice, balanced flavour. Well done, Garth!

We must have both been in the same frame of mind last night Jim. I found two bottles of these myself staring me in the face, so I demolished them!
I can only second Jim's comments myself, a thoroughly enjoyable well balanced stout, and this is coming from a bitter fan!
Re: 18/09/08 - Four Shades of Stout
Just kegged and bottled my latest incarnation of 3 Shades (of Oatmeal Stout) yesterday.
I always aim to change either the hops or yeast for each version. The grainbill remains largely the same.
This version has the 10% oats in lieu of the flaked barley and is hopped entirely with Northdown.
Had a wonderful toasty/biscuit character. Love it.

Re: 18/09/08 - Four Shades of Stout
I'm going to do this one at the weekend but I was unsure about using cascade.
Garth, I think you had similar feelings so I was wondering what your final thoughts were?
I tried a dark beer at the weekend which was quite grapefruity and it was nice but somehow wrong so i'm interested in peoples views on this one. I was thinking about using something like Northdown instead?

Hi Sara,
the Cascade really works, obviously it doesn't hit you like a pale Cascade type brew with steep additons would as it's only one addition at the start of the boil, but you stiil know it's there and it gives a very clean taste, I like it and so does the missus, which is usually a good indication.
hop it with Northdown if you are wary, but I think it works, Oh and Jim and Horden liked it too, see above.
