Were there any other pictures? I should think the beer must be about ready for racking now, Garth?

Rob, There was only one other picture taken on the day and it was of a big fat bloke with an equally large spoon, no-one should have to look at that....yashicamat wrote:Were there any other pictures?

Yep, it's getting racked into a few cornies this afternoon, would have done it at the weekend but have been well busy. Suppose it makes sure that it's finished, still smells very good.yashicamat wrote:I should think the beer must be about ready for racking now, Garth?

Re: Brewday - 4/1/09 - American Pale Ale
Excellent stuff. I'm just trying to rid one of my cornies of the syrup smell then I'll rack my hophead clone into it with some dry hops for good measure (methinks whole hops in a muslin bag should keep the dip tube clearGarth wrote:Rob, There was only one other picture taken on the day and it was of a big fat bloke with an equally large spoon, no-one should have to look at that....yashicamat wrote:Were there any other pictures?![]()

Re: Brewday - 4/1/09 - American Pale Ale
Hello Garth,
Sorry I missed the brewday but thanks again for taking the time out to give me a hand last Saturday to set up the gas for my new cornies.
Also thanks for the beer samples. I've tried the Pacific, odd landlord & the stout and they were all spot on.
Looks like brewing all grain does make for a big leap in quality. If I can clear a suitable space I'm seriously considering buying some gear and having a go later this year (just don't tell her indoors)
Hope your brew made it safely into the cornies. It certainly gave off a good wiff of hops.
I'm off down B&Q now to get a hozelock to check out your tip for smooth filling of the new cornies.
Cheers
Mick

Aargh, Jim, where the hell did you get that from, Horden must have emailed it to you, yer buggers
check the 'orb' out over the boiler near Jim's right shoulder, we had a spirit brewer........
Rob, that crappy syrupy smell can hang around for ages, hot water and soda crystals seemed to shift the stink in mine. Fancy another swap like? That Hophead sounds great.
Mick, glad to help anytime mate, you know where I am, you cannot go wrong going AG, you will notice a big difference, especially the control you have over what you brew.
I drank the beers you gave me, I preferred the Brupaks one, it was quite a nice smooth pint, the other one I think was the Woodfordes with a red cap was a bit sharp, but it was still drinkable.
The Five Brewer Ale is now racked into the cornies, even the yeast cake left in the bottom of the fv smelt great. Looking forward to sampling this one. I'm currently supping my Galaxy IPA, it's a pearler. I'm quite critical of me own brews but this one is very good.

I'm gutted.Garth wrote: I'm currently supping my Galaxy IPA, it's a pearler. I'm quite critical of me own brews but this one is very good.
My Galaxian ale was the one I lost most of recently due to a leaking corny post. I managed a few pints out of it first and it was definitely the best beer I've made so far. The tropical aroma and taste was outstanding. I think the Galaxy hop is going to see much more use in the Bad Dog Brewery. I've got three more packs stashed away.....
I have a couple of bottles of it left, so I'm going to keep them for the weekend as i have a serious CAMRA beer critic mate coming over on Saturday. I haven't seen him for a year or so, so he's never tasted any of my beers and I think he's a bit apprehensive about the whole "homebrew" thing. I'll show him....
Oh well. Stout on Friday then maybe another batch of Galaxian next week.
Re: Brewday - 4/1/09 - American Pale Ale
That's a damn shame Alasdair, what a pisser, least you got a few bottles saved. It definately has the tropical smell, and the Perel I used as a copper hop seems to be a lot less harsh. I think I'll leave it for a few weeks and see how it is.
ooh Camra eh, watch them lot, right strange bunch,......oh did I tell you I'm Durham Camra Beer Festival Director again...? I must be mad.........

Re: Brewday - 4/1/09 - American Pale Ale
Served myself a pint from the corny today, about 30 hours after racking it. Fantastic tight creamy head and pretty much spot on carbonation (i.e., enough that it's not flat, but not so much that there's streams of bubbles rising up). Not 100% convinced on the cascade as a dry hop so far though, it's only been in for the same 30 hours but has already produced a very pronounced hop aroma and flavour. It's definately heading more towards a lychee type flavour which I'm not quite so keen on, perhaps maybe it just seems a tad unrefined at the moment. Methinks pretend this corny isn't here for at least another week and see what it's like then. Otherwise the beer is fine except it's just not bitter enough I don't think.Garth wrote: Rob, that crappy syrupy smell can hang around for ages, hot water and soda crystals seemed to shift the stink in mine. I'd be more than happy to do another beer swap Garth

ha hah! I like it RTD, very good!!roger the dog wrote:You were just a "Lad" away from turning into Long John Silver there Garth

basically it's just the method that has been described on here before somewhere. Clean and sanitize your cornie, fully assemble and tighten everything, go to your gas, using a grey disconnect gas it up then lift the prv, let the O2 out, gas it again, purge it again, gas it up then using a pipe from your fv to a black disconnect transfer your beer into the cornie, you have to lift the prv till there's not much pressure then open the cornie lid, or you'll just get bubbles of CO2 going back through your fv beer. The CO2 being heavier than air will sit in the bottom of the cornie and then on the top of the beer as it's being filled reducing the chance of oxidation. It takes quite a bit longer to fill as you're filling through the thin 'out' dip tube, but it has it's benefits.Bionicmunky wrote:Ooooh do tellBelmont Boozer wrote: I'm off down B&Q now to get a hozelock to check out your tip for smooth filling of the new cornies.

Thanks Whorst!!! What the hell did I do to offend you?
Nah, only kidding I think Garth said something on the lines of "He looks like he's going to brae somebody", when he took the picture. Thing is, I was trying to put on my least scary face for the photo. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!!
