And Finally.....

Image
Aeration and cooling of the wort.

Image
Trub Break material and general scut! Yeah I know it's a waste product but it's my first AG brew:lol:

Image
Waste not want not - the water that cooled the wort will be reused to water the plants.

I pitched the yeast at 25C and tucked it up in the north facing ie coolest room in the house.

23l of 1050 Barefoot bitter ......Done!

Right I'm off to light the barbie and chill some summer ale down!

Sounds like a plan I'll get the laptop out after a few beers and annoy the neighbours!

The HSE can bite my ar*e! It's my back garden and I'll do as I please  How else do they think we do things here at the Barefoot Brewery?

What yeast are you going to use.
Hope you didn't have to much grief for your first one.

I am using Safale S04 as I will be bottling and I like the way it sticks to the bottom of the bottle. It didn't really give me too much grief once I'd got my head around everything. I reckon I could scale the grain back a bit next time as I had to dilute the wort back a bit as it was pretty high. Nothing stressful

Cheers PG I have a really small kitchen so figured it would be better to brew outside where there is more space.

Nice job J_P. =D>

Glad to see you decided on a recipe... it'll be interesting to see how it turns out, especially the hop levels.

No chance with Lucky on the case! You've probably been brewing for a while and have a routine - everything was a bit "up in the air" today but the routine will come with time, hopefully before winter otherwise the missus will have me brewing outside still

It'll get drunk no worries there! I think I put in 5g more goldings than stated on account of the wort was stronger than I'd anticipated, I'll certainly post a review in six or so weeks time.

I'm already thinking of all the dark ales and stouts (or should that be porters?) I can be brewing for the autumn and winter months. I've already thought of the name for one of them - "Sump Oil" my mate drinks nothing else but stout and I want something thick and warming for winter. A world of possibilities appears to have been opened to me today. Either that or I'll have options paralysis whenever I come to brew

Cheers Vossy

It went well aside from my excessively strong wort at the end, but I suppose working out what to expect is all part of the fun!

Well Done J_P and congrats on your first AG :pink:

Great Pics, just one question are you pouring the hot wort into the fermentor airate and to start the cooling process?

Only this could cause hot side airation which although the extent is widley debate.

With the immersion chiller it's best to drop it in to the boiler 15 mins before the end of the boil to sanitise it and run the water through it to cool in the boiler. Helps to filter out the cold brake through the ops. Be carefull to ensure the output pipe is secure though as I didnt once and when I turned on the water I got sprayed with boiling steam and water fron the output pipe. That was one badly scolded beer belly I got that day.
