Late Hopping Experiment (hot)
Re: Late Hopping Experiment (hot)
I tried the 5 min addition as described and bottled an APA with Fuggles for 60 min additions and Citra for 15 min and 5 mins . The beer is great for flavour . It was bottled 4 weeks ago and is a great drink.I shal use 5 min addition next time I brew.

Nice to see you back online Simple Onesimple one wrote:Cheers gents.
I strain off using the bittering hops and a hop strainer. So crystal in to a holding tank. Then with each different method I conduct the heating, addition and cooling in a smaller boiler. Which is then strained using another hop filter. The only one which can be done by this method is the 'no hop' which has the cold break go through to the FV.Jocky wrote:Quick question: what do you do to filter your wort after letting it settle?

Nice write up there Simple One.
Despite JonnyT taking issue with the methodology, the most important point for me is this;
Try to find what works for you.
You've pointed out many of the variables in your experiment and actually encouraged experimentation. As you say, taste is a very subjective thing. So how the hell would lab conditions actually benefit, other than decreasing margins for error? Who knows, I brew in a shed. Maybe I need to get a laboratory!
As to the results. How many of us buy/bought into the 80c steep method as best way of getting hop aroma/flavour without actually comparing like this? I know I did.
The problem with us homebrewers is we are (often) always looking for 'the answer' to any given question, rather than accepting that it is rarely, if ever, clear cut.
And on that note, time to try a 5min addition

How are the samples standing the test of time? Or are they still in storage?simple one wrote:Oh and before I forget, I have saved a set of bottles for aging to see what methods hold up.
(as tasted by me, your experience may vary)

Re: Late Hopping Experiment (hot)
I moved house recently, and the movers broke one bottle. Thankfully it was only the non hopped beer. (and a bottle of barrel aged brodies prime)
The beers all stood up remarkably well. With all of them losing a small amount of aroma, but largely keeping the flavour intensity. The only one which had a more radical change was the hop tea beer. This increased in bitterness to the original sampling, and was on the edge of drinkability. Although this may have been a thinning of the beers body.
Next experiment will be a comparison of 5, 10, 20, 30 additions.

I await the next installment with interest...
I hope the move went well...
Now you are down south, will you make the Shipley NCB event next March?
Cheers!

Still finding the five minute additions are providing the best use for aroma/flavour. But I will enjoy experimenting with how much aroma you lose (or gain) with 10, 20 and 30 additions.
We'll have to see about Shipley, any idea what the beer is this year?
