Rakau doesn't crop up much in commercial beers in our neck of the woods. Nor Riwaka. There are very limited supplies of these hops.

Look what I found...

I definitely need to brew a Riwaka experiment. Rakau is 56% myrcene, not quite as high, but still above average.

Riwaka is a hop every hophead should get his hands on at least once. I've read warnings to not be heavy handed, it can end up tasting like gasoline! Used wisely it can make awesome beer, I've tasted a few.

Last night, Stan Hieronymous and I talked about New Zealand hops (that's a fun sentence, I won't lie). He said the secret is out about Riwaka so it's become almost impossible for brewers to get worldwide because of short supplies and extremely high demand, and that it will remain so for years because of long-term brewery contracts.

He agreed Rakau is almost as good and so far, still fairly plentiful and obtainable.

Interestingly, he loves myrcene too but said it's extremely volatile and blows away very quickly. So, if you're picking hops primarily for myrcene levels, you better have a plan in place to package young, dispense and drink through the whole batch super fast.

It tastes very very good and from the keg it's really smooth. Like a pint in the pub. Only better! If I do say so myself.

I'd highly recommend it for a bloody good English ale. Only a week old but well impressed.
