Hi all

I have a bit of time off as I changing jobs and have to use up my holidays

So I decide to brew this up to day

O.G. 1.074 (22L)
Pale malt 4.54 kg
Mild malt 1 kg
Brown malt 750g
Chocolate malt 750g

Crystal 55L 250g
Crystal Dark 250g
Special B 250g

Hops (IBU’s 50)

EKG 35g First wort hopping
EKG 42g 60 min
EKG 28g 15 min

Yeast

1.5 packs of S-04

My tap as a little open so I lost some of the first running, not a whole lot but enough to reduce the gravity by a few points

Here are some pics of the day

Nice one OB, how long before you think you'll be drinking this one?
When do you start the next job, don't tell me its the start of next month you jammy sod :D

I have one of the same mash tuns they aren't really up to the job of big beers or large batches, hence why im looking into the bain marie SS thermoboxes.
That said a big old bucket with a couple of cheap camping mats like DaaB says would be a lot cheaper and it wouldn't require me losing a few nights sleep fretting over (incorrectly) cutting holes in SS.

Going to bottle this one, and oak it in the secondary, but it really depends on when i will get around to bottle it. i really hate bottling.

I start the new job on the 31th, I have around 2-3 days on which i have to go in this month

Blimey! You're not kidding!

Na, i covered them with hot water for 15-20 minutes to sanitize them and them just added them straight in. It should be interesting

Very interesting brew, particularly with the oak chips. I'm watching this space. :) Re mashtun, I know how you feel....9-10kg grain tops, with no room for manoeuvre if you need to adjust temp with hot/cold liquor. Batch sparging is out, unless you drain the first wort before adding any extra liquor.

Bigger....tun....needed :D

Just looked at the weight of grain - not maxed out by any means...what grist to liquor ratio did you use? Must of been quite a thin mash or a coolbox smaller than the 33L one I have, which I thought was pretty standard.

I think i used 2 liter per Kg, it was certainly at the limits of the mash tun, with my standard one i can get 23l of 1.075 OG at 75 % efficiency.

but with my new mash tun things are little different

Here are some pics of it and the thread

Looks like your old mashtun is a bit smaller - at 2L to a KG, it wouldn't have filled mine up at 33L capacity but your new one does away the problem magnificently :)

kegged this last night an it had an interesting oak aroma off it, I will give it a few weeks before tasting.

In a vanilla-y Innes and Gunn type of way, or a woody resiny/astringency kind of way?
