Got everything I need to do this delivered in time so I'll be brewing this tomorrow night:

Brewlength 25L
Estimated OG 1.056
Estimated IBU ~40
Estimated SRM ~9
66 Degree Mash - 90 Mins
Boil Time - 60 Mins

5400gm Pale Malt Maris Otter Grain 91.5%
400gm Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 7.0%
100gm Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 1.5%
25gm Pearle [6.90 %] (60 min) Hops 14.5 IBU
20gm Magnum Pellets [13.10 %] (60 min) Hops 24.4 IBU
30gm Cascade [6.80 %] (10 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
50gm Cascade [6.80 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)

Fermenting at 18 degrees with US-05

This will be the first time I've used pellets, I have a really fine mesh bag (courtesy of H&G) do i just put them in this and chuck the bag in the boil or as i'm using whole leaf hops too will the hop particles get filtered out anyway through those, in which case chuck them in without the bag - whats best :?:

Anyway, weighed out tonight and got the water prepped, boiler going on when I get home from work tomorrow :D

Good luck with it Wez, i don't know about the hop pellets but i'd guess the whole hops will filter them out

Hi Wez,

I've always used pellets and a sack. When I do it, I throw the pellets in teh sack, tighten the drawstring, and then tie the strings to something and let the sack dangle in the pot. I think the best results come when the sack is fully immersed but the top is still out of the wort a bit. Often I tie the string to a wooden spoon and then lay the spoon across the top of the pot.

Good luck

7% med crystal will probably get you darker than SNPA Wez, I used 5% 120EBC (60L) and lower colour maris otter base malt and it was spot on (IMO). Or is it the lighter stuff you're using?

I just throw the pellets in and recirc the first gallon or two of run off, the whole hops filter them out.

I always use a fine mesh bag for my pelleted hops.
The bag is easy to fish out and you have less risk of any extra trub in the fermenter.

Be safe, use the bag!

Good luck with the brew, Wez.

For what it's worth I used a 2.5EBC base malt and 6% crystal 120EBC and it still came out too dark when compared side by side with the original. BTW, what's the thinking behind the Cara-Pils addition? I've never used it so I don't know what flavour it has.

I brewed something very similar but i used light crystal 60 EBC (400g) and carapils (100g).
To my eye the colour was very close.
Brewday

I was orginally planning on using the grain amounts from garths recipe

Pale 5.2kg
Carapils 300g
Crystal (120EBC) 200g

Only thing was i didn't have any 120 EBC and so doubled up the amount of 60 EBC and reduced the carpils by 200g accordingly so as not to have to many unfermentables.

I thought it worked well.

Boil about to finish, no pics today - too busy bottling as well

Mysty was right, it's going to be darker than SNPA I think, I read his post after i'd weighed out and mixed though

The nylon hop bag did the trick 8)
