Darker Than Pale Ale

I was at a loose end today so I thought I'd get a brew on. It's based on Marcs Townes IPA recipe but I've buggered about with it. I also fly sparged for a change, now I know why I prefer batch sparging :D

23L
OG 1055

Mash 66c 90 mins
Boil 90mins

5kg Marris Otter
200g Wheat Malt
100g Crystal 60L

60g Cascade 4.80% AA 90 mins
22g Cascade 4.80% AA 15 mins

Whirfloc 10 mins
S04

Totally uneventful brew day apart from forgetting to switch the boiler on :bonk

Now for some pictures....

The brew tasted really nice from the sample I took, so I'll taste again after about 5 days and maybe dry hop in secondary :D

Lovely pictures Sub, should be a tasty one, Townes IPA was one of my favourite brews so far. It'll be interesting to see how much difference the crystal makes.

I thought I could get away from cascade hops by hanging out on a UK forum!

Looks like another banner brew day the lazy way.

Cascade is getting hard to come by around here (or so I am told).
English hops are as rare as hen's teeth too unfortunately.

Just using up some oldish supplies of Cascade, and the way it's going on this forum you'll not escape them for a long time

Cheers RTD. The only reason I used a bit of crystal in the first place was that last time I did the Townes I thought it a little on the thin side and I couldn't get that "polished" look from it. I know I could use Carapils or mash hotter but I thought adding the crystal might give it a little more body and a slightly darker colour, ergo it doesn't look quite so much like piss. Nonetheless I be reporting my findings over the next few weeks :D
