Recipe:

4kg Pale Malt (Marris Otter)
500g Lager Malt

30g Styrian Goldings (90 mins)
10g Styrian Goldings (15 mins)
Pinch Irish moss (15 mins)

12l Strike water
10l Batch Sparge

Used Safale US-05 yeast made into a 2 litre starter (left for a day with plenty of spray malt)

My first AG went alarmingly well. The 2nd runnings after sparging with 10 litres of water the gravity was down to 1.010 approx.

FG was 1.040 and the final volume was 20 litres. It has a nice straw colour to it and smelled great.

Took first running and returned to tun then drained into FV while more sparge water heated up.

No i forgot to compensate for tempreture. The FV has 20 litres in at the moment, a couple of litres evaporated off im sure.

Which way does being warm make the gravity go? Up or down?

Cheers

Measurements at temperatures higher than the calibration of your hydrometer (usually 20°c) means the reading you get is lower than the actual gravity and you should compensate accordingly (there's a conversion table somewhere in one of DaaB's posts on the forum) 8)

Ah well just have to wait and see. The FG was taken when it was cooled as it was after the immersion chiller had done its work so im guessing the FG must be reasonably correct.

As for my final runnings thats going to be wrong for the above reason i guess. Next time ill know to correct for tempreture.

Thanks guys :)

Excellent Hoppkins, btw, does anyone filter the trub from the wort before adding yeast? Is there any point or does this help "make" the beer?

The gravity has reduced to 1.006 :)

I tasted it, very nice and pale tasting. Very clean.

But..not as hoppy as i expected. Would it be ok to add a bag of about 20g of hops to the FV for the last 2 days to hop it up a bit?

I have some Hallertau hops, Styrian Goldings, Fuggles and Challenger

1040 to 1006 in a day and a half......are you sure :?:
That's SO4 territory

It's far too early to tell what the hop aroma of the final ale will be...give it some time.

What temp are you fermenting at?

Welcome to the dark side.....you won't regret it 8)
