The Mash water is heating up and I,m getting ready for the next brew.
Pop's Stout..as Highly recommended by ECR and many others on this group.
I,ve modified the grain bill slightly as I could not get hold of any Carapils, and I prefer a slightly weaker brew, so I'm aiming for 4.5-5% ABV.
Brew length 40 litres.
7.0kg Maris Otter Pale
2.0kg Crystal Malt
1.0kg Flaked Barley
1.0kg Roasred Barley
0.5kg Chocolate malt
0.4kg Black (patent) malt
150g Hallertau 3%
50g Fuggle 4.5%
Both added during boil (60min)
Whirflock tabs 2 at 10mins.
Yeast Ringwood

When I did mine I used 25% less of everything and it came out really well.
Have almost finished it now so need to brew again soon!
Hope it's going well OB

Not going to badly ECR. Struggled to get the volume for the 2 batches into the Mash tun...I,ve done 40 lires before so knew it would go in, but didn't allow for such a big grain bill....DoH

So I did it in 3 batches
Got a tremendous boil going and watched the hot break material disappear, then one of my kettle elements went click...not the fuse and the lead checks out OK, so must be the element.
So its boiling not quite as vigorously as I'd hoped..but its boiling
Cutting back by 25% on everything wasn't a bad idea...mine's pretty black...in fact if it turns out Cr4p....I'll chuck some gravel in it and resurface my drive
40 mins of boil left, then I'll see what the SG is.

You might find it's the cut out on the element, they have been known to do this with high gravity brews.
DaaB, Can the cut out be easily removed?

Thanks for that DaaB, my element is the Tesco Cheapie type. I'll take it to bits and have a look. I see your point about its design temperature, but in this instance the elements are clean and hardly used and it was before I put the hops in and the other element has not tripped...All things considered its probably easiest to get another one from Tesco
I'll take it to bits though in case it becomes a frequent problem.
With respect to the brew.
The boil has just finished and I have a temperature corrected SG of 1058, so if the final gravity is around 18-20 then the brew should be around 5 to 5.5%ABV which will suit me fine.
So that's me for this week...I'm goint to start cleaning up ....and then down to the village pub for some more of that Bowland brewery Hen Harrier
