Brewing this up today, another one from Brewing Classic Styles, slightly tweaked as usual. I've got a gallon stirred starter that's been hanging around for a week, should still be fine I reckon.

John, I actually have no idea! It just sounds like the kind of beer I would like. I know of one brewed in Britain which is supposedly a Vienna lager style, "union" by meantime http://www.meantimebrewing.com/ I'm not sure of any others.

There's plenty of American versions but these are quite unlike the original European versions (US versions tend to be much more citrus hop focused) , I think Brooklyn lager is supposed to be one.

There's also mexican versions like Negro Modelo which again don't have much in common with the original European ones.

I had some of the Meantime one on draught a couple of days ago. Caramelly is my best description - also it was a bit flat. It was a end of keg half though so maybe not at it's best. Personally I preferred the Helles. I'm not sure if the Meantime Vienna appears in the Sainsburys Taste the Difference four packs?

The Porterhouse in Covent Garden had a Vienna on special a couple of years ago. I liked it but I was fairly inebriated when I had it so my tastebuds could have been wide of the mark

yea, its one of there winter specials they have on every year, not bad but i always though a little to hoppy

I had a look at meantime's website and it's inspiring to say the least. I'm surprised and delighted that a company like that can survive in today's market. Needless to say I'll be doing my bit from now on to support their effort!

I will also be doing this recipie probably on Sunday. That should give me a couple of days to get the yeast starter going really well. I plan to follow Mr. Z's directions in terms of formulation but I can not resist doing a decoction, probably a double with 30 minute boils. I plan to brew and do my taxes at the same time which hopefully will lessen the pain since I know I will be sending the Feds some money after I'm done.

They're doing something different, very well, and have grown from brewing pretty much for just their own pub in Greenwich to having several free trade outlets and a major ongoing contract with Sainsbury's. I guess that Sainsbury's deal is a big thing for them - the margins might not be great but it's steady volume.

Good day apart from forgetting to fit my hop strainer which seems to happen every brewday. Used the fridge to bring the wort down from 17 to 7C, just pitched the yeast 10 minutes ago. Should be a good one

Haven't seen it, but I have seen the Sainsbury's/Meantime Oktoberfest. I'd buy them more often if they didnt come in such dinky bottles.
