I managed to get a brew done today
I thought i'd try to brew a strong ale. I think i done ok.
RECIPE-Shelobs Sting. From the Middle Earth Brewery
6266g MO
501g Crystal
150g Malted Wheat
36g Choc
2 hr mash at 68C.
Hops boil 90 mins.
16g Sticklebract. 11.2%
13g green Bullet. 13.2%
18g Green Bullet Last 15 mins
12g NZ Goldings. 3.7% Last 15 mins
40g Green bullet. Steep.
1 tsp Irish Moss.
Thames valley & S04 Yeasts.
I done a very slow sparge-90 mins. Collected 31ltr's 1058-pre boil. After boil i had 23.5 ltr of 1068
I pitched my Thames liquid and a sachet of S04 was sprinkled on top too.
If this gets down to 1010 region it will be 7.4%
It smells good and tastes great. Hope it ferments well. This is a bit of an experiment before i try a durden park original IPA.

how does a 1068 grav get 7.4%? I thought the max abv of say a 1068 would be 6.8%? I'm sure I'm wrong though!
Nice looking brew anyway - love the name!

I think I'll make something like this.

Yea but you won't get to 1.010 with that recipe I don't think, the predicted FG is 1.018

Not really sure-haven't had enough experience with hops to be able to tell. To me the NZ hops are a bit more citrusy and easier to get.
Regardless of what FG it finishes at it's gonna be quite strong.
The airlock is bubbling away merrily this morning.

Not to hijack the thread but what equations are all these different programs using to calculate abv? And where did 1070 come from?
I use (OG - FG)*133/FG which is a simplification of the sums found
here.

The 1070 comes from the
predicted OG using an efficency of 75%. I know the measured was 1068 but using that figure you only get 6.53 abv as the beer is still unlikely to attenuate much below 1018. If you change the brewhouse efficency to 73% which then gives a Predicted OG of 1068 the Prediced FG goes to 1017 and the prediced ABV is then around 6.6%

I just predicted that
IF it got down to 1010 i would have a nice strong beer. Either way 6.6 ABV is strong to me and it's just a trial for doing a DP recipe and brew method.
How can you tell what FG without knowing the yeast strain anyway? As some attenuate better than others? I'd love to know how to use beersmith-just downloaded it today. I've another post on that subject

I work it out by OG-FG multiply by 0.129 therefore
1068 - 1010=58 multiplied by 0.129=7.4% ABV
But i was guessing at FG. I don't suppose it will get down there. I'm happy enough anyway as it's gonna taste great!

Ahhh ok. Using my maths with your numbers I come out similarly to Beersmith.

You mentioned s04 in your post.
