Excellent post ashbyp, great pics  I noticed you use ice to chill the wort, how long does it take to get it down to the pitching temp? Do you plan to use any other means in the future?

Cheers.

I fill the sink with as much ice as i have then put the pot in, which probably contains about 12l after the boil. When the ice has melted I turn on the cold tap and circulate the cold water around the pot. This gets the 12l down to about 30 degrees in 20mins or so. After adding topup water the whole lot is at an OK temp for pitching.

As long as I'm doing extract boils I'll carry on this way because it works fine.

... that's quick!, my immersion chiller is not much quicker than that. Mind you, I suppose it depends on the temp of the tap water.

It's a pretty big stock pot, so i guess with just the 12l in there there's plenty of surface area for cooling.

Next thing i want to add to my kit is something to control the fermentation temp.

I have an old fridge, and a ranco controller, just need to work out how to set it all up.

In case anyone else has a ranco, i have found this wiring writeup, which is pretty good!

Nice one, ashbyp. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one trying to fit in brewing around small children! 8)

I know not everyone agrees but if you get the fermentation right I'm convinced you can approach AG quality with those Brupaks extracts (at least to my taste buds :) ).

Correction - I timed this properly yesterday. It's more like 40mins to get the pot down to around 30 degrees - not 20. I'll add an immersion chiller to my wishlist.
