I was planning
this Hobgoblin clone for tomorrow but I had the green light from SWMBO to brew it this afternoon:
5.5kg Maris Otter
0.25kg Crystal Malt
0.20kg Dextrine/Cara-Pils
0.15kg Choclate Malt
15g Fuggles 4.5% @ 60 min, first wort hop (7.0 IBU)
28g Bobek 3.0% @ 60 min, first wort hop (7.9 IBU)
15g Fuggles 4.5% @ 30 min (4.9 IBU)
28g Bobek 3.0% @ 30 min (5.5 IBU)
15g Fuggles 4.5% @ 0 min, steep for a while
15g Bobek 3.0% @ 0 min, steep for a while
S04 yeast like my other brews - maybe I should start thinking about different yeasts.
OG estimated at 1.055
Bitterness estimated at 25.3 IBUs
HLT is on, mash tun is prewarming. I've treated my water as per my alkalinity test yesterday using DaaB's kit - I then checked my liquor to make sure the amount of CRS I added was accurate. Then I added 1/2 a Camden tablet per 23l to remove chlorine/chloramine.
Pics to follow later

Argh - it was all going so well - batch sparge went well, nice clear wort in the boiler... then I looked on the worksurface and saw the hop strainer

Yep, been there.
Hope the rest goes well.

Back on track - I read somewhere something about hot-side-aeration, let's hope it won't affect the brew after I had to tip into another bucket, fit the strainer and then tip back again
2nd addition of hops are at the ready and I've even cleaned up after myself so far which is a first.

Don't worry about it

...it's a myth

...certainly not worth worrying about.
Hope the rest of the boil goes well

Phew - all done and in the FV. Ended up with 22l at 1.056 so nearly spot on.
Everything else went to plan - got some nice clear wort out of the boiler and not much trub, so things are improving
Thanks for the comments - I'll ignore the HSA stuff, sounds like stuff I don't need to worry about anyway
Yeast is rehydrating and I'll post my pics a bit later

I brewed a variation of this last week - mine's in the 2ndry now, hope to bottle it once it drops clear. Sneaky nips - tastes good-yum
hope the rest goes well!

Some pictures from the day... There's an absence between sparge & boil due to things getting hectic when I realised I'd forgotten the hop strainer
New boiler tap - replacing my W&D-backnut-springs-off-during-boil tap. Lovely gare'ish orange!
Mash tun preheating
Strike water goes in
Hops weighed out
Running off first batch into a temporary vessel while the boiler heats up the rest of the sparge water. I really need a dedicated HLT.
Floating sparge device
Gravity check of first runnings
12 hours later, S04 bubbling away nicely

Just had a taste of this - four days in the FV and currently at 1.018 which seems a little high but the S04 may not have finished yet - think I might give it a rousing.
Tastes very malty, sweet and quite bitter - should be a good'en when it's finished & matured

I like the fv lid with holes in, might be good for reciculating the first runnings from the tun.
Good pics, great brewday.

Thanks - that's what I use it for as I batch sparge but usually need to recirc a few litres before the wort runs clear. It works pretty well but doesn't float exactly level (due to the heat) so tends to tip to one side but it still works a bit better than tinfoil.

I'm just supping on a pint of this now. It's rather sweet - I think I mashed too high - it's a bit cloying from the crystal. The hops work well though.
I also think S04 doesn't add much to this brew. To me, Hobgoblin is very fruity which must come from the yeast.
I'll brew the same recipe, mash at 65 and find a liquid yeast to match (not sure which yet).
I'm now using my ATC controlled fridge to ferment and will hopefully get more consistent results with all my brews.
That's four sentences beginning with 'I' so that's enough ramblings for now

Forgive my ignorance, is dextrin unfermentable? Losing it would reduce the sweetness?
