Here are some pics of a recent brewday for TT (Tim Taylor) no 3.

Had a couple of "moments" but all looks good.

The moments were - thought I would be clever and use thermocouple in the thermo pocket I have on my mash tun - told me it was at 66 degrees but when I checked the grist with the old failthfull glass thermo it was nearer 80 ! damn.. get the cold water in there quick. The other 2 "moments" were I left the HLT to warm up and the thermostat has obviously packed up because I legged it back up the road to pick a jug up (brewing down at the stable) and got back and the HLT was up to 80. Drain some off and put in some cold - sorted... and there was me thinking that this would be plain sailing !

My final moment came when I went to use the immersion chiller only to find that the long 3KW elements that I have put in my boiler stopped me getting this device down into the wort (why didnt I check ???) - anyway succeeded in getting the coil to go in sideways around one of the elements and resting on the hop stopper. Alemans Hop stopper was superb. worked a treat. no trub or seeds etc in the wort and a really fast flow.

The brew went fine though.

here we have the set up. I have now raised the boiler up higher to allow run off into the fermenter. The height allows a better head pressure for the sparger to spin. Boiler in the picture is now lagged.

The mash tun in use is my smaller one for doing 5 gallon brews (keeps the heat better than the bigger one). Here is the golden promise malt doughed in.

Here is the lagged boiler with the good quality Lidl camping mat.

Sight gauge needs fixing at the top but was fine. Boiler holds 80+ lires with plenty of headroom. This is an old copper immersion tank.

This is the rolling boil with both elements switched on.

I didnt take any pictures of the run off into the fermenter but as I did do this a couple of weeks ago I have a picture of me racking off into a cornie.

Kitchen window is an ideal height to stand the conical on !!

Have cobbled up some JG fittings so I can rack straight into the Cornie under a CO2 cloud. perfect.

Next brew will be another Bicknoller Best I reckon. nice and hoppy.

DaaB wrote:You had an eventful brewday there, glad it turned out well in the end. Nice pictures, I wonder if you can train a horse to dough in :-k
The horse did try and take a chunk out of the stand before I moved it over !

I tell you one thing - the horses love the spent malt. couldnt get enough of it. made it last a few days as I thought it might constipate them. result.

another use for the cast offs.
