Hobgoblin Clone - 2nd AG brew 22/6/08

Well, after Friday's introduction to AG brewing, I went ahead and tried another one today using the following recipe and grain kit from Barley Bottom:

Hobgoblin Clone

4Kg Marris otter
175g Crystal malt
150g Torrefied Wheat
150g Flaked Barley
30g Chocolate Malt
25g Progress hops 90min boil
20g Styrian Golding hops 15min boil
15g Styrian Golding hops 1min boil
1 Protafloc tablet
Safale-04

All went well - in fact even better than least time as the boiler hop filter didn't clog this time as i had drilled 20 x 3mm holes in it. I also left the chilled wort to settle for 30 mins after I had removed the chiller. One - or both - of these changes fixed the problem, so that left me a happy chappy.

I ended up with about 22 litres in the FV, despite starting with 32 litres into the boiler, so that's about 3 litres lost to trub, hops and boiler deadspace, and the rest to evaporation. More than I thought.....

The gravity reading was 1.042 corrected to 25C, which Beer Tools says will result in an ABV figure of 4.12% - so it's likely to be a less alcoholic goblin clone than the real thing. If I wanted to brew this again but make it stronger, what's the best way to do that? Just add another Kg or two of MO to the grain bill? Beertools says that +2Kg would take the ABV up to 6%, but how would it affect the taste - would you up the other ingredients in direct proportion?

Efficiency looks to be around 70% - but I can't find a figure for the potential gravity per kilo for the torrefied wheat or the chocolate malt, so I just used the same number as I had for the Crystal Malt (240)

Things I learned today: Take the temperature in the mash tun in more than one place before putting the lid on. If it's inconsistent, stir it a bit more...

All tidied up now and just about to crack a bottle of Brakspear Triple to celebrate. I can't wait until I have my OWN brew to celebrate with though...[/u]

Only problem is, I'm kid of stuffed now.....no more FVs, or kegs left!

I've only got two cornies and these two AG batches are destined for them. I'v also got a kit of Woodfordes Wherry (hopped extract type) that will be ready in a week or so, so as soon as that's done, it's going to get drunk ASAP to clear out space for another AG batch.

I guess I'll have to order a couple of more cornies in the end. My plan is to be able to have 2 beers on tap at all times, plus 2 conditioning.

Maybe I need another one (or two) for specials, or parties, or.......

It's good this hobby! I just hope that I get at least one good 'un out of these first two, cos I've got 5 kilos each of Optic Malt and Marris Otter sitting waiting to get mashed up...

Well........

I do like beer a lot.

I also like tinkering around, making stuff, cooking, science, mathematics, etc, etc...(all good bloke shed stuff).

To be honest, I'm surprised I've never got into AG brewing (or brewing at all) before, but my wife gave me a Woodforde's Wherry "micro brewery" a few weeks ago and although it was fun to do, it was kind of unsatisfying. It made me think "how much more difficult can it be to do this properly?"

Surprisingly, the answer seems to be "not a lot". Which is fantastic.

Now I'm waiting for my #1 FV to clear out (hopefully Friday). I'm very fired up about this hobby/addiction - already planning what to brew next. I presume this is a common symptom
