Lowside Pale Ale

Post by stevezx7r » Tue Jul 08, 2008 12:51 pm

Mash started at 12:40 with the following recipe -

Ingredients

Amount Item Type % or IBU
4000.00 gm My Grain (5.0 EBC) Grain 88.50 %
250.00 gm Aromatic Malt (55.0 EBC) Grain 5.53 %
250.00 gm Wheat, Torrified (3.3 EBC) Grain 5.53 %
20.00 gm Roasted Barley (1160.0 EBC) Grain 0.44 %
60.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.00 %] (60 min) Hops 53.2 IBU
30.00 gm Cascade [7.10 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
15.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.00 %] (10 min) Hops 4.8 IBU
0.50 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04) Yeast-Ale

Est Original Gravity: 1.042 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.011
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.00 %
Bitterness: 58.0 IBU
Est Color: 14.7

I've amended my recipe from earlier as I had 75g of Amarillo left so I thought I'd up the ibu's a little by splitting it - one dose at 60 min for bitter the rest at 10 mins for a tad aroma.

I might up the cascade as the Roasted Barley may be overpowering.

Anyway, I've taken some pics so i'll upload them in a bit.

Nice looking recipe.

p.s. Get that courier booked, your beer engine is taking up valuable kitchen space

I forgot all about that !

Thanks for the reminder, will get onto it today.

I've been busy mopping up water. My sparge water (fv with element) tank decided to let go at the tap so I lost about a gallon in the process of moving it from the fv to the keg, then, I lost some more after I replaced the tap as I forgot to close the tap

These things are sent to test me. O:)

After filling the boiler almost to the brim (I know) it boiled over. So, I've had to throw all of my bittering hops in, thats ~70g and will continue to boil for 60 mins depending on what the gravity/amount is at the end.

If I brewed every day I bet I wouldn't have these problems.

Anyway, back to the boil...

As per usual the day started off well, kids and me fed and watered then nipped off to the kitchen to brew.

Kids were fine, I think they're getting used to being told "NOT in the kitchen" while i'm in making beer/food.

Anyway, everything was going fine, taking pics, fairly clean and cleaning up after myself then the fv tap went pair shaped and I had a boil over from hell

Collected way more wort than I needed (I was being greedy) too. :)

As I was filling the fv from the boiler the tap on the fv went again! So i've replaced it (and the other one) with barrel taps - they have less/shorter threads but they are a better fit for the job than the tat I had.

So, I now have TWO fv's with fermenting wort  One has around 6 gallons the other has a few litres plus ALL the loose hop leaves and trub. Nice.

As you have probably guessed, I lost my patience today, what with THREE bloody taps giving way  Grrr !

Anyway, here's the pics upto the point where things went south.

That was the point where I stopped taking pics.

In a few weeks, provided I have no other problems, I'll take a pic of the finnished article.

BTW, SG 1038 so a tad off from the 4% I was after @ 3.6ish % I'm tempted to throw some us05 to lower the FG a bit more....
