Northdown Wonder (Redux) AG#5 13/07/08

Looks like me and BionicMunky are brewing the same thing today, although I've got no shiny bits

This was the first AG brew I ever did (back in the depths of time......about 23 days ago!), and as i drank the whole lot already, I thought I'd try it again now my system is a bit more "dialed in"..... Last time, I had the hop filter clog while emptying the boiler into FV, so ended up with a LOT of trub in the FV cos I had to shake the crap out of the boiler to get the liquid through.

It still tasted wonderful though!

Anyway......here goes:

Image
Grain bill ready to go. All from BarleyBottom. On a side note, I had to go out and buy a plastic bin to keep my grain in as the mice have found where it is....

Image
Hops. I'm 10g short on the Northdowns as I used some last week for the Crossbreeed brew, so I think I will add some extra Bobek at the end of the brew instead.

Doughing in

Yummy. Anyone fancy barley porridge for breakfast?

These Hanna thermometers are the dog's danglies, BTW.....

Anyway, that's it so far......I'm off to have a cup of tea and fix a leaky shower while this lot does it's stuff.

First hops in. 50g Northdown plus I added 20g of Bobek as a top up. Difficult to focus through the steam....

Looking very nice.

Can we have a picture of the robo-mower? :envy:

Also -- That Hanna thermometer, can you just dunk it in the mash and leave it there?

Hogarth,

Here's RoboMow about his business:

As for the thermo - yes you can just leave it there. I already ruined several cheapo digital ones doing that though, but the Hanna one seems to work perfectly. The probe handle is solid PTFE ad it seems to be fully waterproof. I got it on eBay for £12 (I think from a disgruntled catering student), but they're about £100 to buy new.

By the way - whereabouts do you live? Your avatar says Brixton.... I used to live just off Acre Lane (Corrance Road) until about 3 years ago. Lived there for 12 years or so.

Oh yeah.......and the rest of the brewday too:

She came out at about 1050 at the end of the day - so no problems there. A little higher than BeerTools' estimate of 1047.

All done!

Next up.....off to the pub seeing as I've been brewing instead fo cooking Sunday Lunch.....

Nice looking wort there, nice work for AG#5 8)
I was brought up in Surrey, lived, schooled and early years of work around Chobham/Woking area. Big place surrey though, so you're probably miles away.

I live pretty much on the Surrey/Sussex border. If you take the A281 out of Guildford towards Horsham, we are exactly half way. It's not a bad neck of the woods - although surprisingly short of decent boozers selling quality beer. None within walking distacne sadly (in fact, not much of anything within walking distance apart from cows, horses and sheep!)

I went to get if out of the shed this morning, but it had gone. I must have only stunned it with the spade. Tough little sods, badgers.....

Progress report.....

Now down to 1012 after 3 days. Colour looks good Tastes and smells very sharp though.

As I'm going on holiday next Thursday, I'm not going to bother putting this into a secondary. I'll just leave it in the FV for another week, then rack it straight into a corny and leave it alone while I go away.

I hope it mellows out over the next three weeks.
