AG Brewday 16.07.08 - V-Twin

This one's for my Brother who will be 37 in August (this should be ripe by then)

V-Twin - Specialty Beer

Type: All Grain
Date: 16/07/2008
Batch Size: 23.50 L
Brewer: Stevezx7r
Boil Time: 90 min Equipment: Brew Pot (5 Gallon)

Ingredients

5000.00 gm Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.0 EBC) Grain 89.21 %
300.00 gm Aromatic Malt (55.0 EBC) Grain 5.35 %
275.00 gm Wheat, Torrified (3.3 EBC) Grain 4.91 %
30.00 gm Roasted Barley (1160.0 EBC) Grain 0.54 %
55.00 gm Cascade [7.10 %] (90 min) Hops 30.0 IBU
20.00 gm Cascade [7.10 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep @ 80C)
1.00 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 15.0 min)
1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04)

The last batch had 20g of the roast barley in and i've just transferred it to the barrel and a few bottles and it tastes great. I'm glad to say it has a definate maltyness about it with a slight roast character but not OTT or stout/porter like. The hops are just starting to come through and should get stronger as the batch matures.

I'm hoping for something similar with this one but as i've increased the grain bill (and abv level) i've also upped the RB to 30g. This should end up around the 5.2 - 5.5% abv mark which is what i'm after

It's named in ref of my brothers bike; an Aprilia Falco 1000cc V-Twin 8)

Oh, a big thank you to Garth who supplied me with the grain used in this batch. Nice setup, Garth, and the bottle of porter and stout went down well last nice. Cheers

Sounds a nice one. I've not tried any american hops yet, they seem to be getting more and more popular. Hope all went well!

Sounds good to me! The bike's not too shabby either....

I've also got some American hops en route (Cascade & Amarillo) - i want to do an American style IPA when they arrive - so I suppose I should also order some S-05 yeast....

Yeah, the s05 yeast is good but as a tip I would tilt you fv away from the tap as the yeast makes a head that will not go, so, when you come to remove the beer from the fv the krausen gets clogged up in the tap. Not good.

All done and undershot my target gravity a wee bit. Ended up at 1046 when the corrected gravity readings were bang on target :( at 1052 So not sure what happened there.

Had the usual problem with taps again, this is getting annoying. My sparge water boiler tap came undone even though I'd used two locknuts on the inside then the washer on my boiler/MT went again. Luckily the boiler/MT washer leak was only a drop a second but the sparge water boiler was peeing everywhere ! Had to drop the water into a keg, fix the tap then transfer back again. I gotta get me some decent taps.

Anyway, all pitched and waiting for it to kick off

At what stage did you take the 1052 reading? Not sure but if it was before transferring from the boiler to the fv it could be you lost 6 points to sugars retained in the hops

Hmm, never thought of that. Could be. In the past I have squeezed every last drop out of the hops and trub after the boil to get to 5 gallons and the end result tasted and looked fine so maybe I'll go back to that.
