Been wanting to brew a Smoke beer for a while now and finally went about getting things ready to go about it.

I wanted to smoke my own grains and a friend has Beechwood trees. Trimmings from low branches were perfect.

The grains were soaked 15 minutes but that is far too long.
5 minutes would be plenty but based on a few websites I went with 15 minutes......... not the next time.

Here are the smoker boxes
Stainless screen stapled to pine, each holds 4 pounds of grains

3 hours later and they were done but not quite dry enough so into the clothes dryer in a pillowcase to finish off............... wife hollered the sheets would smell of smoked meat Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm SMOKED MEAT!

The beer is fermenting now and certainly smells smokey enough.
I am anxiously awaiting the end of September/early October for a taste of it, should go well with smoked meats and cheeses 8)

adventurous stuff - i've only tasted a smoked beer once and it was superb. ought to have a go really as I built myself a smoker out of a couple of aluminIum kegs a couple of years ago...

good luck with that, I'm interested to know how your smoking compares to using rauchmalt.

ARGH!
Look at the AWEFUL spelling on the thread title, no wonder it took me so long to find the thread

Thanks fellas.
Next Smoke beer has grains that I smoked after smoking a pork shoulder (Boston Butt)
Hickory and Mesquite.
5lbs Halcyon pale malt and 5lbs of MO along with specialty grains should make a nice

Smoked Porter-haus

Very, very impressive. I find some commercial smoked beers overpowering, so the idea of making them to taste is really interesting. Great stuff!

(You can change the spelling in the title by editing it in your first post, by the way)
