Brewday 25/09/2008 - Thrapplemeister

Post by Jymbo » Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:01 pm

Been wanting to do a clone of Inveralmond's Thrappledouser for some time now but I can't get a recipe so I've come up with my own based on the (very limited) information I can get from their website:
A golden copper coloured ale, which has a thick and creamy off-white head that laces your glass all the way to the bottom, leaving you wanting more.
A marriage of Pilgrim, East Kent Goldings and Cascade hops presents a delicate citrus aroma and a unique spicy floral taste.
Don't have any Pilgrim hops so I've substituted Challenger. Also, used a fair bit of amber malt as there is a nice biscuit/toffee flavour off this one. Tried caramalising the first runnings too. Anyway, I may be way off but here's what I came up with. I'm halfway through the boil at the minute.

Thrapplemeister

Brewlength (litres): 23
Brewhouse Efficiency: 70%
Bitterness Units (IBUs): 25
Original Gravity: 1042
BU:GU Ratio: 60%
Mash: 90 mins
Boil: 90 mins

Grain Bill

Maris Otter (77.66%): 3650g
Amber Malt (11.70%): 550g
Crystal Malt (5.53%): 260g
Wheat Malt (4.68%): 220g
Black Malt (0.43%): 20g

Hops

Bittering Hops (90 mins)

Challenger (7.1%): 15g
EKG (4.6%): 13g

Flavour and Aroma Hops

EKG (4.6%): 20g (15mins)
Cascade (5.4%): 10g (7mins)
Cascade (5.4%): 20g (Flameout)

Yeast
Wyeast British Ale 1098 (1 litre starter)

Note: Caramelise 1 litre of first runnings and add to boil.

Certainly be interesting to find out how you think it compares. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the original commercial brew...

Got 23L @ 1042 - exactly as planned! Tested this evening and it's down to 1008. Tastes superb and similar to Thrappledouser (as far as I remember - haven't tasted it for almost a year). Too early to give a proper verdict but I've high hopes for this one.

Sounds excellent. May make this my second brew. My local had this a few years back and it was a lovely pint.

Quick question are East Kent Goldings the same as Goldings?

ChrisG, East Kent Goldings are the most popular variety of Goldings but there are others.
This brew has turned out really well - the one change I would make when doing it again is to add a few more IBUs to the bittering hops - probably add 20g EKGs for bittering instead of 13g for 30 IBUs total - I reckon this would be closer to the original.

It sounds really good. Will be making this one for sure!

But next up I think will be a Summer Lighting clone. Mainly coz I have all the required hops.

It's been kegged for a week now - been wanting to have a good sup, but I'm bunged up with the cold and couldn't taste the difference between beer and coke! :( Looking forward to a few pints of this over the weekend. =P~

After a few weeks of heavy cold followed by sinusitis I'm finally able to taste again :D This is a delicious brew - one of the best AG recipes I've done. It certainly bears a resemblence to Thrappledouser, although it's a bit darker in colour - probably could have done without the Black Malt which was just there for colour anyway. The caramalised wort gives a subtle toffee flavour to the malt and the hops are perfect. I would definitely recommend this one.

This was one of of my favourite AGs to date, Chris. I haven't had Thrappledouser in ages so I can't really remember how close this is, but it's a lovely brew in its own right.
