1st Brewday - 29/10/06 - Stout

Post by Garth » Sun Oct 29, 2006 5:40 am

Ok, just fired up the HLT full of filtered water, just noticed the time and realised the clocks went back, hmm... could have had another hour in the pit, but not to worry, I'll just get finished earlier

mash underway, will start sparging by about 7ish, found out digital thermometer is quite inaccurate, you can see the probe in the mash, compared to my trusty glass one

ok, boil is underway, hops going in at 8ish, the copper slotted manifold seemed to let quite a bit of tiny bits through, is this normal? will it settle after the boil?

then a nice hour to clean the kitchen of all that sticky wort on the floor

smells good, just like when we used to go to Sunderland years ago to do shopping and you could smell Vaux doing its brewing.

Must work out another way of measuring and collecting wort from the tun while sparging.

Garth - do you recirculate the first runnings back into the mash tun ? Helps to clarify the wort....

yes, I did return the first runnings, I carefully jugged about 4 pints back in by slowly running it down the side of the tun to create as little disturbance as possible. and it was still very bitty, I tried using a clean mashing and sparging bag roung the mash tun tap but this made a hell of a mess, it did collect quite a bit of particles though.

will these bits spoil the boil and will they settle out?

No not today but yesterday Eskimobob started brewing at some ridiculously early time.

Me, when I brew I don't dough-in until 10am.

found out that my cfc is ultra effective, and only had to have the water inlet tap turned on a trickle to get to come down from 80'C to 25ish took about 20 mins, I ended up with about 14.5 litres in the fermentation bin from 19 litres before boiling, is that ok?

and to all the clever people out there how would I work out my efficiency?

Garth - your "boil underway" picture shows the boiler lid on. Did you leave the lid in place with hops in the boiler ? If so then not advisable as evaporated undesirable hop products will condense on the lid and drip back into your beer.

arrgh, didn't know that, got told to crack the lid on but leave a gap with a little chock of wood or something, I used a peg, oh dear,

are you supposed to leave the lid completely off?
