Hop Factory IPA - Christmas Eve brewday
Posted: Wed Dec 24, 2008 4:13 pm
Tried to make a virtue out of using up some hops from the fridge, and moving closer to IPA territory, I've brewed this today:
Hop Factory IPA Dec 08
Size: 23.0 L
Efficiency: 72.0%
Attenuation: 75.0%
Original Gravity: 1.047 (1.050 - 1.075)
=====#==========================
Terminal Gravity: 1.012 (1.010 - 1.018)
===========#====================
Color: 5.44 (8.0 - 14.0)
=#==============================
Alcohol: 4.59% (5.0% - 7.5%)
=====#==========================
Bitterness: 40.8 (40.0 - 60.0)
========#=======================
Ingredients:
5.0 kg Maris Otter Pale
30.0 g Challenger (7.1%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
25.0 g East Kent Goldings (4.1%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
13.0 g East Kent Goldings (4.1%) - added during boil, boiled 15 min
1.0 ea Whirlfloc Tablets (Irish moss) - added during boil, boiled 15 min
10.0 g Styrian Goldings (4.0%) - added during boil, boiled 5 min
1 ea White Labs WLP005 British Ale
No piccies I'm afraid, had too much else on this morning! All went pretty well, this is my first use of the whirlfloc tablets and I'm really impressed with how much gunk came out in comparison with using irish moss. Also, I tried stirring whilst using the IC as per Chris' suggestion and shaved a lot of time off the day. Not sure I used any less water though, so I'll have a fair bit stored up for the kettle.
The other new thing I did today was to start the boil on the first runnings whilst waiting for the second batch to infuse. This helped enormously as it completely avoided any chance of boilover, which is always a worry with my boiler.
And I think I've got my brewhouse efficiency nailed too. Hit my target on the nose.
Merry Christmas everyone
Paul
