Fiddlers Elbow Clone (ish) #4

Post by haz66 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 9:13 am

After the adjustments for brew #3 of this its still not just quite there yet.
The orignal is still darker and a little more hoppy
so this is what i`m doing for brew #4 of it.

3.5kg Maris Otter Pale Malt
400g Wheat Malt
200g Crystal Malt
30g Styrian Goldings @ 60mins
20g Styrian Goldings @ 20mins
10g Styrian Goldings @ 10mins
10g Styrian Goldings @ 0mins

I`ve also just swapped the hop schedule round slightly
instead of 40g @60mins and 10g @20mins, not sure if it will
make much differance to taste apart from bringing the IBU down slightly.

Well better go get the mash water on.

All done and dusted now
I`m knackered, not stopped since i put the mash on.
Had 40 pints of the wifes lager to bottle as well so did that during the mash.

It was looking good as it entered the FV, the colour is quite a bit darker now
i know this will lighten a bit yet they always do, i also used a protafloc tablet
for the first time today and what a differance, the crap in the boiler was unbelievable.
The sample i put in the test jar is well clear already, just hope the rest of it turns
that clear.

Umm what to brew next ?.

How did it turn out? I like Fiddlers Elbow.... although I would want more hops in and a bit more body. So keen to see how this went.

This turned out very well indeed, my mates came round and thought it was that good that
they nearly cleaned me out of it, its all gone now but i`ve brewed it twice since and i kegged one
to see if there was any differance in taste to bottling, and the result is that the one in the keg as
taken a lot longer to mature than the one in bottles, 4 weeks in the bottles and about 6 weeks in the keg,
even though the kegged one seems to get better evertyime i sample it, so i guess its still improving.

Swapping the hop schedule around did actually produce more flavour, i think as far as the flavour goes its there,
the colour however still needs to be redder, but i think that adding more crystal will alter the flavour, as i dont
get a big caramel flavour from the original, so i guess the colour will have to do, unless there is anything else i can add ?.

You could always add a carmel colouring. But I would only be interested in emulating the taste, or getting it slightly better. I think when I make it I'll use your recipie and add a bit more bittering, and loads of aroma.
