this is me being abit arty..

The mash when really well, hit 68'c spot on, i tested the PH for the first time, seemed to be in the right ball park, around 5 to 5.5 collected 2 batches of 16l
into the boiler, hops in , remembered the whirlflock this time

chilled the wort to 20-c opened up the ball valve...trickle ...trickle...stop...desaster, the hop stainer seemed to be blocked, got the spoon in the there to try and un block it, not happening, so i did the unthinkable ..i brew up the tube, that got it going for a couple of seconds, then stoped again, so i sanitised and lenth of sython tube, and had to go in from the top, it was a right ball ache but got 23 l out in the end,

so 23l at 1.048, ater emtying the boiler i found the problem, when i had put the IC in the the boiler id knocked the elbow joint completely off the strainer, i never got it soldered because it was on really tight and hadnt come off befor...il get it solded by next brew.
so anyways , we pitched the yeast cleaned up and was in the pub by two oclock so not a complete desaster.

cheers and beers , kev

I'd be interested to hear how this one goes Kev - Sam Smiths Nut Brown is a really nice pint :)

How did you work out the bitterness units? I get about 60 IBU's with those hop additions.

The bitterness units come straight from the Graham Wheeler recipe. The figure Kev posted is the same as that in GW's recipe. Have done this beer to this hopping rate and it comes out malty and fruity and not too bitter at all.

In fact must do this one again when I get hold of some Fuggles :D

i didnt think to work it out, i just did as the recipe stated, but using Daabs hop rate calulater

Bitterness (IBU/EBU) Calculator
Enter Weight of Hops: grams 90g
Enter Alpha Acid Content of Hops: 4.4%
Enter Estimated Utilization: 23%
Enter Volume of Batch): 23 L

Click to Calculate Bitterness of Hop Addition

Bitterness: 40 IBUs (aka EBUs)

i used 20g east kent goldings last 15 minutes 5.8 %, how many more IBUs would that add if any?

yeah i will let you know how it go's, planning to bottle up towards the end of the week, the OG is currently at 1020

Never used daab's calculator - Promash calculates it to be quite a bit more. I have managed to get it down to 54 IBU by changing the hop IBU formula to Tinseth. I realise that none of these figures are entirely accurate, and you are supposed to settle on one particular formula and stick with it, but 34IBU just seemed so vastly different to the figure I was getting.

I suppose 40 + 4 or so for the EKG (Promash says 6.5) gives a figure about halfway between the 2 (34 & 54).

That will do for me, i had a taste out of the trial jar when i tested the OG, you can definatly taste the bitterness but i wouldnt say it was unplesent or too bitter, may just be the fact that its only a few days old,it tastes really nice though, really looking forward to this one when its ready.

Sounds good :). I think I'm going to make this my next brew, so please let us know how it develops.
