AG#6: 09.02.09 - Townes IPA (With Pics)

Hey guys,

Currently mashing at the moment, my first brew since moving back up to bonny Scotland:

Townes IPA (Batch size 21L):

90 Min Mash at 66C:
4.77Kg Maris Otter Pale Malt
190g Wheat Malt

90 Min Boil:
56g Cascade (8.2% AA) for 90 mins
16g Cascade (8.2% AA) for 15 mins
20g Cascade (8.2% AA) 80C steep for 20 mins

The water up here has not really got a lot of anything in it so I adjusted the water chemistry according to Graham's calculator. I didn't add any calcium carbonate but I think I should have, as my total alkalinity is somewhere between 10 and 15 mg/L and I think my mash pH is a little low. Nevertheless, I am sure it will turn out ok!

Anyway, pics so far, will update as the day goes on:

Man this is taking ages! Had 3 stuck sparges (I ALWAYS get them, no matter where I get my grain, I am thinking I need to make a new tun manifold...)

Anyway, more pics:

Nice pictures G, 'tis a fine recipe to be sure.

Cheers guys, I have never attempted something this bitter before, I am looking forward to the result!

Finally finished, it was my longest brewday yet (8 hours). I think this was mainly due to the kitchen being smaller than my last place. However, I hit 1.050 bang on, and got my 21L. Here are the rest of the pics

2nd lot of hops in

First brew I have done in about 5 months and it was certainly a welcome return - next hurdle is finding a way to serve cool beer, as we are in a flat and have nowhere to keep my cornis except at room temp :(

A jockey box maybe? Cool box filled with water and two or three ice packs, coils some 3/16 beer line inside - should cool the beer sufficiently.
