My third brewday went well. Im getting used to the Equiptment now and really enjoying them. I thiught I'd do a stout and saw Garth's brewday a while ago when he did this and it looked lovely.
Also a deciding factor was a brewday post from adm where he had a pic of his version freshly poured using his mixed gas - Show off! It did look lovely! Anyway heres the recepie thanks to Garth.

First runnings

A nice rolling boil with the cascade hops in.
Image Image
Cooling again struggling to keep the run off at a steady 20°c as the flow really effects the temp of the wort. Too slow and is above 25. Too fast and it comes out at under 10°C!

Image
OG just about spot on at 1.042. I have to say the calculaters on the site are brilliant! This is my third brew now and I have always hit the correct gravity.

And its away. Wonder if it can be ready for st Paddys day?

Its good to know you have given the recepie a good review. Now too see if I can match Garth's execution of the recepie :? Well, I can but try!

Looks like a nice smooth brewday....you won't regret this one, it's a cracking stout!

Slips down a treat....

In fact, it slips down so well that I'm going to brew it again as soon as my Carafa III arrives from H&G.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it. I don't think it will look as good as yours though, as I only have pure CO2 to serve. Should still be a cracker, going on what you guys all say about it!

To those who haven't made/tried this - it's excellent

In fact, I might make another to keep 'till next winter, maybe up the abv a couple of notches too :)

I'm drinking this at the moment at only 2 weeks old!

Got it to 1042 but It stopped early at 1014 (with nottingham!?) so it's not as strong as I had planned but it's still a tasty pint.

I'll make this again but with more oomph

I made this and its the best of the 5 AG's Ive done so far. I didn't add any Carafa III though - is it worth getting some in for next time I make it?

I believe Garth mentioned that the Carfara III is what really gives it that smooth flavour.
Indecently I notices I may have made an error with the hop additions. I calculated in Beersmith the correct IBUs as per garths recepie to boil for 60 minuets, as Garth did, but I noticed the calculation I did in Beersmith was for 90 minutes! I still did the 90 minute boil but only added the Cascase for 60 minutes. Hope this slightly reduced bitterness doesn't effect the balance?

This looks like getting to 'one of those famous recipies' stage. I've just got all the gear to give it a go. Garth, tell us about the process of corbonating with the 50 / 50 n2 / co2 mix. I've got a widget cylinder of gas and a king keg ready
thanks

I am going to have a go at this recipe.

Do you think there would be any benefit of using a Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale yeat for this recipe?

Just done this last w/ end - a difficult day and a difficult brew
1 last minute decision to go for 50 lt so a doubling of grain weights
2 no room in mash tun for it all at a 2 lt/kg rate
3 needed 2nd mash tun so out with old grain bag PDQ
4 31lt at 72c and settled to 66c
5 then dog has a stroke and off to vet to get her put to sleep
6 then immersion cooler leaks 7lt back into boiler - new clips to fix it.
7 then 2nd boil to reduce again
8 then boils over while I'm burying the dog!
9 then run off siezes up at 25 lt
but finally 50l t at 1046 in fv and all's well
this brew will be bottled as "SPINNER'S REVENGE" after the dear old dog.
