Multi tasking! - Several pictures beware of bandwidth!!

The wife is working away today so I am looking after the dog and working from home. If that, in itself, isn't enough to prove to her once and for all that I can multi-task I also brewed a wheat beer in the new brewery.

As some of you wanted to see the contraption in action here are a few shots of the highlights...

Yeah, it was expensive. I reckon in all about £800-£900 but then I was toying with the idea of getting one of those B3 jobbies from the states and for what I wanted it would have cost nearer £3k with taxes and shipping. The wife said I could do it but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much.

I know it'll take a long time (if ever) to recoup the costs but it's a pleasure to brew on and it's exactly what I wanted.

It's all about the fun of doing it. I brough £120 worth of gear/ ingredients back from a local brewing shop when I started and my friends were really off about it, although they spend nearly as much binge drinking on alcohol some weeks.

this is really interesting - is the mash tun on the top? & you use the pumps one to transfer the lauter water up to the mash tun & the other pump to recirculate? Why not use the spinny sparger for the recirculation?

Matt,

yes the mash tun is on top. I have one pump to underlet the mash and also to sparge and another to recirculate and transfer the wort to the copper. The reason for not using the whirligig to recirculate is that you will sometimes recirculate the odd bit of husk when you start the mash. This will pretty soon clog the sparge arm. Therefore I use a completely diferent circuit for wort than from clean liquor. It works really well; I'd recommend it. Also, although I don't buy into this hot side aeration thing, I also don't want to tempt fate!

Of course, the real question is, why don't I sparge with the recirculation manifold? And the answer is that I love to see the whirligig doing its thang

I think so. I've got a hundred litres of beer fermenting in my garage now from two brewdays. I have done two brews in a day before so it's not beond the realms of possibility to brew 100l in a day. I reckon that's worth a few quid on its own just for my time. Not sure my good lady will see it that way. She'd bemused by the whole thing really and can't understand why I'm so excited. She does, at least, see the savings over buying a brewery from the US.

Thanks mate. I have spent many an evening surfing the web for ideas and this brewery is the result so it's nice to see that others appreciate it.
