Old Speckled Hen clone (extract)

Post by OldSpeckledBadger » Wed May 27, 2009 1:35 pm

Brewed this this morning. Brew length was chosen to fit nicely with whole packs of spraymalt:

Fermentables:

1500g Light Spraymalt
340g Brewers Sugar
225g Crystal Malt
10g Black Malt

Hops:

23g Challenger
8g Golding for last 10 minutes

Brew length 13.5 litres
OG 1.050
FG 1.012
ABV 5%
Bitterness 32 EBU
Colour 35 EBC

Yeast S-04.

The only hitch was the hop filter clogging (again :() so I had to pick up the boiler and pour the last few litres through a sieve.
Best wishes

Keep us updated Badger, I'm planning a Speck clone myself soon.

ps, what sort of filter are you using that keeps clogging?

It's just a length of 15mm copper pipe with a row of 2mm holes drilled in it. I've got some of that SS mesh tube which I think I'm going to put over it to try and keep most of the gunge at bay.

Good stuff :)
I've been thinking about an OSH-ish too, but on steroids!
I like the flavours in the OSH, which are similar to St. Austel brewery Admiral's Ale, so I've been tinkering with this recipe, wonder if it would turn out?!
Keeping the ABV down so I could drink lots ;)

T'old Blotchy Duck

Fermentables:
Malt Extract Syrup Pale 1500 grams
Crystal Wheat Malt 185 grams
Caramalt 94 grams
Roasted Barley 38 grams
Crystal Malt 56 grams

Hops:
Challenger Whole 10 grams
Cascade 12 grams
Bobek 4 grams
Cascade 8 grams
Bobek 4 grams
Challenger 2 grams

Final Volume: 15 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.035
Final Gravity: 1.009
Alcohol Content: 3.3% ABV
Bitterness: 35 EBU
Colour: 45 EBC

OSB,

as you say you only have 1 row of holes drilled into your hop filter - have you thought of drilling another couple more rows as that might sort out your problem ??

I did consider doing that. It's probably something I've have to come back after the summer as I doubt I'll get another brew in now before it gets too warm.

Bottled this today. I was a bit worried because due to the recent warm spell the temperature in the FV was around 24C for most of the time. Having had a failry generous sample (A.K.A. a pint ;)) I must say I'm really happy with it; no hint of any off flavours and it tastes fantastic :D :D :D :D :D

And there's me just testing a tiny glass full of my latest stout that i bottled on Wed... shocking!
I really want to try it properly but it needs to carbonate at least first! ;)

No, beer was made to be glugged down so you need a representative sample :D

I seized the opportunity to get another brew going last week whilst this cooler spell's with us.
Best wishes
