Massive Styrian Stunner 6-5-09 (now with picture goodness)

Post by flytact » Fri Jun 05, 2009 3:50 pm

Going to leave work early today and set up this event. Six brewers and many more admirers for a happy hour brewday!

13.61 kg Maris Otter
9.53 kg 2 Row, US (don't have enough MO for everyone)
1.30 kg White Wheat Malt
150 gm Centennial (60 min)
122 gm Styrian Goldings (15 min)
122 gm Styrian Goldings (flameout)
6.33 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 min)
6 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04)

Going to mash everything in one huge cooler at 66.7C
Boil will be in 3 or 4 different kettles

Pictures to follow, see if you can spot the ex-pat :)

OK, here we go.
Mashed in two different coolers, as the huge one brought by a friend wasn't as big as he thought
Turns out that six batches is a WHOLE lot more water management than I thought. By the end of the brew session we ended up with about 5.5 batches worth of beer. Just too much work and too many new people to teach and be exact at the same time.

Image
Mashing in the second three batches (15 gallons).

Image
Sparging. The second tun didn't have a spigot so lots of transferring. Lots of work...

Image
Weighing the hops. I had Centennial as the boiling hops because I didn't have enough Styrian for a single hop brew.

Blue Angels Intermission

Image
Low and FAST!

Image
Starting the boil. We did two 10 gallon boils and two 5 gallon boils.

Image
Bystanders and helpers. Got real crowded and the attention span was wavering.

16 hours later, fermentation is kicking off. Lots of trub in this one, not sure why. Should settle out though.
This was my batch and I doubled the aroma addition so maybe that's the cloudiness.

All in all it was a great night. 6 batches brewed in 6 hours from water on to garage doors closed. Created two new brewers who actually opened their kit boxes last night. Water, water, water. Probably a bit too much work for the two of us who are the main brewers. But I'm not going to let anyone go home without a full fermenter.

looking well fella. I showed a couple of mates my AG set up as they were interested in going AG. Its amaising how attention spans waver at about the 3 hour mark. Yet they were back in a flash when I cracked open a few bottles of the last brew as a sampler! lol :o :=P

Excellent Work!

Got to move me to America! It looks a lot more "happening"!

And your garage looks about the same size as my ground floor!

I'm not in any of these pictures. Always the cameraman I suppose.
Here's me earlier this year:

Parp, yep big garage, my wife's studio is above, so the double doors is a byproduct of good art!

Double Winner!

She'll be inspired by the wonderous aromas wafting around - one masterpiece inspires another! :)

YYYYYYYYYYYYYes Flytact, my idea of a good 'stunner is 6-batcher ;)

Interesting use of US hops - one of the best stunners I made was cascade/styrians.

Yum, all that stunner... Image
