Fermentables:
Malt Extract Syrup Pale 1500 grams
Caramalt 200 grams
Crystal Wheat Malt 190 grams
Sugar, Household White 150 grams
Crystal Malt 30 grams
Roasted Barley 26 grams

Hops:
Challenger 60 mins 13 grams (FWH)
Cascade 60 mins 11 grams (FWH)
Cascade 15 mins 8 grams
Bobek 15 mins 8 grams
Challenger 15 mins 8 grams

The Ingredients, just missing the tin of Light Coopers LME:

Getting the Gervin English Ale yeast ready, I seem to have run out of s-04:

Grains and First Wort Hops going in at about 40 C:


Final Volume: 13 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.046
Final Gravity: 1.009
Alcohol Content: 4.8% ABV
Bitterness: 42 EBU
Colour: 43 EBC (I dare say its going to be a bit darker than planned due to the coopers Light LME)

Not a bad little brewday

about a week after it being bottled, just having a little taste, a very dry chalky bite... pretty drinkable already

I bet it has got a bite Sounds good By coincidence, I've just opened a 2 litre bottle of my Sett Bitter which is just malt extract, crystal malt, sugar and a single addition of Fuggles hops. The first pint barely touched the sides There may be trouble ahead ...

My 'Extract Otter Dark Stout' recipe is gong down very fine as I type, really interesting flavour with a bitter sweet roasty tingle
I would say that the 'Bulldog Blend Maris Otter Extract' doesn't have much effect on it and i'll be turning this one into an All Grain brew or even a last-ish Extract brew for a quicky to use up some DSM

I wouldn't imagine the minutiae of the extract would be noticeable in a stout. I'll probably knock up a Hop Back Entire Stout this autumn as my stock of 1 litre PET bottles will sitting idle by that time and we can't have that I plan to do some full mash brews at some point. The first step is to sort out an IC. ATM I can't find 10mm micro-bore copper tube in less than 25 metre coils @ around £35. I only need about 10 metres so unless I can find somewhere that sells it in that sort of length I may as well cough up an extra few quid and buy a ready-made one. Been watching the highlights of Springstein at Glastonbury whilst the beer's been going down far too well hick

Its something like £1.70 or £1.30 per meter at PTS, probably plus VAT! http://www.ptsplumbing.co.uk (no online shopping though I'm affraid.
There is a local plumbing wholesalers near me, I need to go there and see what it will cost.... So you say I'll only need 10m then????
When I make an IC I'm going to coil all the 10mm then fit 10-15mm connectors and have 15mm running up and over the side of the boiler to some Hozeloks (over cheaper brands are available!)

The hop back is indeed worth doing, I'd be happy using up some of my DSM in a Entire Stout brew

Based on tonight's session I'm more than happy with the quality of beer I'm brewing from DSM. For me, going full mash is more about reducing the cost per pint whilst bearing in mind that it's going to take a fair few brews to pull back the cost of the extra equipment.

The Stock Pot + fittings and the Copper pipe do seem to be the most expensive bits. I suppose the all Plastic Brewery is cheaper than buying a stock pot, maybe a few car boot sales would get you some kettles to destroy??
I suppose Chris's False Bottom Mash tun / Boiler / HLT is the most economic route.

I've already got the boiler built and use it for extract brewing. It's based on a 25 litre food container (£1.20 off Ebay).

I actually bought 4 and when I went over to pick them up he threw in an extra one for luck. So two are being used for storage, one is the boiler, one is a general-purpose FV, bottling bucket, water treatment bucket et al and one is sitting in the loft as a spare.

£19 from B&Q or Wickes for a 10m length of 10mm.
