AG#10: 27.06.09 - Eden's Eye Ale (With Pics)

Hi guys,

Woke up at 4am today and could not get back to sleep so just decided to get a brew on! Named after my step-daughter - she came up with the name and insisted I call it Eden's Eye. I was aiming for something deuchars-ish and did the following:

Code: Select all

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
3574.91 gm Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 88.04 %
82.50 gm Wheat Malt, Ger (3.9 EBC) Grain 2.03 %
7.23 gm Styrian Goldings [5.80 %] (60 min) Hops 4.5 IBU
5.73 gm Aurora [5.40 %] (60 min) Hops 3.7 IBU
5.73 gm Fuggles [5.70 %] (60 min) Hops 3.5 IBU
50.50 gm Styrian Goldings [4.40 %] (15 min) Hops 11.9 IBU
11.47 gm Williamette [7.10 %] (15 min) Hops 4.4 IBU
403.00 gm Brown Sugar, Dark (98.5 EBC) Sugar 9.93 %
1 Pkgs SafAle (DCL Yeast #US-05) Yeast-Ale
I mashed at 65C for 90 mins in my new false bottom tun and it lost nothing over the 90 mins, so very happy. My target was 21L at 1.046 but I ended up with 23L at 1.043 as I forgot to change the wort lost to boil percentage to account for the shorter 60 min boil. Still works out at my usual 70% efficiency so not so bad. The new tun drains like a dream too, which is great as in my cool box tun I get stuck mashes every single time I brew.

Anyway, pics below, off for a kip now!

Looks like you had fun.....good job that man. 4am is real dedication!

I was up fairly early and thought about getting a brew on myself, but ended up doing some work instead and then going to our local village "carnival" (I've been to Carnival in Rio de Janiero, so a few Cub Scouts in paper costumes doesn't really cut it for me) However - I did set my HLT up before we went out, so I've got a mash on right now...."Carnival Ale" in fact...

Good pics, I like the look of that Deuchars recipe, and I've got all the Ingredients... Might be worthy of my first AG instead of a TT landlord :)

Thanks guys, the US-05 has started to spread across the top of the FV already, very different looking than my usual S04.
Chris, thanks for that tip, I hadn't even thought of that and I will do that for my next brew, don't want to get right to the end and stuff it up! Really like your take on a mash tun too, can't believe I put up with stuck mashes until now!

With 10 AG's done now, I think I am really starting to make ale as good as anywhere, I think my next step is to get an old fridge to control the fermentation temperature better, and perhaps even attempt a lager.

aye, that's a thick and creamy US-05 head alright, sometimes they just never go away and hang around for ages.
