Last Friday I had a go at Graham Wheelers Summer lightning. I haven't taken any brewday photos or put any on the blog for over a year so I thought I would go public on this one..........

Excellent work, its a good write up

After 3 weeks in the primary I finally managed to get the beer into a corny today.
I had a final gravity of 1.010 giving me a beer of 5.5% ABV (according to Beer Engine).
Dry hopped with goldings and will force carbonate.
First tastes are positive!

I've got this on the hitlist for when my malt comes this week. What are the opinions regarding the Wheeler clone...good? I am interested here opinions Hopback yeast and if it's worth going the extra mile to kidnap it/

I bought a bottle of Summer Lightning now they stock it at the local hyperglobalmegamarket. Am I alright using BKE instead of DME as I can't source DME locally. I was going to make up a 1litre starter with 100ml BKE for a 23 litre batch...sound ok?

I'd say that's about spot on, and what most have been doing for a while now.

Hop back yeast would be worth cultivating although looking back at mine I used WLP 007 Dry English which attenuated 80% so the ABV was 5.2% and the IBU was 40

When I found myself without malt extract I did a micro mash in a pot on the stove and in the oven to collect a few litres of wort.

If you do used the hop back yeast make sure you step it up to maximise yeast growth, and be prepared to coax it to the final gravity as many as well as myself have found it stops 1.014ish but with no detriment to the finished beer. There are some threads in the yeast section.

It's a great brew and the weather at the end off the summer is going to be just right for drinking it
